Man I would love a Pixel Pro that wasn’t hand crampingly huge for me. Throw all your camera features in something like the 7 or smaller, and I’m sold.

I'm typing this on a Samsung Galaxy S22 because I wanted a telephoto lens but not a giant phone. I had previously had 3 Google phones and prefer the interface, but the 7 Pro was bigger than I wanted.

Tehnomaag t1_j1cirb9 wrote

Hmm, I'm pretty sure that for THAT price you could get a mirrorless camera and a telephoto lens.

Although it would be a bit bigger than even 7 Pro ;) so there is that.

TryingSquirrel t1_j1dhxr3 wrote

The S22 was only $300 via Google Fi (with the only conditions being that you activate it within 30 days and keep it active for 2 months). That was cheaper than they were offering the Pixel 7a (though I bought my wife the 7a not via Fi and I think it was the same price) and half the price I would have paid for the 7 Pro.

But regardless, it wad more that I just wanted a small form factor phone with some sort of telephoto. I have a mirrorless camera with a variety of lenses. I rarely use it unless I am doing something specifically to take pictures and need the really long telephoto. Most of my photos are when I'm hiking or mountain biking and it is just so much more convenient to be able to take good pictures without carrying more gear (especially when biking). I live in a big open landscape and the wide angle main lens of most smartphones makes the background seem so small and so far from a nearer subject. Backing up and using a mild telephoto creates a lot more compression of space and comes a lot closer to capturing the feel of being in those landscapes.

My scenario exactly. I adore my base S22 (after a lot of Samsung de-bloating to make it act like a Pixel) for these reasons.

I'd love to get back into a Pixel device but until they can give me a triple camera setup in something within the 6.0-6.3" range I'll continue buying the base Galaxy (or hope something like the ZenPhone 9 gets refined with a third camera and wireless charging for its next generation).

Yes, but without macro and all the zoom features. I want all that in a smaller form factor.

I use this wallet case and find the grip for your finger on the back to be incredibly useful. Picked up a MagSafe case from Mous so that it's compatible with the Pixel 7 Pro.

Pixel Fold looks cool but only if it supports a proper active stylus (god please deliver me from having to buy only Samsung devices just because I like to draw)

I've come to terms with the fact that having the latest phone means virtually nothing like what it used to.

I'm definitely not spending $1000+ for one.

Yep. That's pretty much all I care about.

Give me a 4a with a new fancy camera and it's an instant buy for me.

iLamb3r7 t1_j1cq3kw wrote

I don’t think that would happen, that ship have sailed. The only manufacturer that brought back “features “ that I know of is Sony with the headphone and wireless charging. I hate the on screen fingerprint technology, even though it’s much better on my 6a compared to any of my Samsung phones (S22U,S21U and Note 10)

Hello-There-Im-Zach t1_j1dpifw wrote

That’s fine I’ll just buy androids that actually have the fingerprint scanner, it was a step backwards in the wrong direction when so many companies decided to move from fingerprints into facial recognition because they wanted those analytics when in reality the most streamlined form of unlocking my phone was the one where I literally just placed my finger on my phone in the right area while it was still coming out of my pocket, and by the time I had it in front of my face it was unlocked. The absurdity of forcing facial recognition down everybody’s throats has always annoyed me since I owned the pixel one and was delighted by that feature.

2

PatternrettaP t1_j1e1cn4 wrote

Also dislike the facial recognition, but like the under screen reader. Upgraded from the pixel 4a to get it. Even after owning it for a long time, the natural way I hold the phone never put my finger near the reader and it was annoying to find every time. I get much fewer rejected scans with the on screen one on the 6a.

I may go back to the pixel from my iphone... Main reason you ask? Talk to text. I became so reliant on it with my pixel 4xl, it worked perfectly! With my iphone you would think I hate a speech impediment the amount of stuff it mangles.

The call screening is so good as well. I kinda forced myself into a 14 pro from a pixel 5 and regret it.

Fatkokz t1_j1g4vrh wrote

Yeah I got the 12 pro and also regret it. Got the watch to go with it, and man in that a phenomenal piece of engineering. However the screen stopped working a year and a half in....$299 to replace... Obviously not worth it. So next phone I'm back to Android

I had the original Pixel, the 3a XL, and now the 5a.....I had the 6 Pro for a week after the 3a XL but sold it to go back a generation to the 5a because of the camera bar along the back. I absolutely hate that bulky nonsense and I believe this current 5a will, sadly, be my last Pixel. Great, great, great phones but the physical design has moved in a direction that I can't be comfortable with.

TheLazyHippy t1_j1cg8o0 wrote

I'm currently using a 5 as well because of the fingerprint scanner on the back. Had an LG G6 & G8 before this for the same reason, that's such a huge feature for me but sadly more and more brands are moving away from it.

4

evoic t1_j1g5fmw wrote

Oh. Right! I forgot that was a huge factor as well. I agree with you. In fact, I got it so early after the release that the in-screen fingerprint scanner was buggy and Google had to release a fix. In all honesty, though.....I would deal with the scanner in the screen if they would get rid of the humpback. : (

A lot of r/Android and r/Googlepixel fans will love the idea of a smaller phone.

Though it's very interesting to see how Google is trying mimic Apple specifically.

Please, Pixel, follow apple's direction with the GPS emergency alert. 🙏 🤞

−1

BearOnTheBeach28 t1_j1crdoh wrote

Can you expand on this please? Pixels have had crash alert based on the location for years before iphones and also have had other location based emergency alerts (it's hidden in the settings to toggle which ones you want to get or not).

5

Usagiboy7 t1_j1ebwv9 wrote

Lost hikers have been getting rescued recently using new GPS emergency SOS program on their phones. Im not sure all of the details because I dont have an iPhone. Normally, they'd be relying on something like a Garmen InReach or SPOT. I'm currently using Android with bottom of the barrel phone that'll need replacing soonish. But I dont plan to get an iphone. So, I'm hoping someone else comes out with an equivalent (or hopefully better) feature.

You're saying pixel already has this feature? Because that would be awesome. Which models? Thanks!

2

BearOnTheBeach28 t1_j1eflvr wrote

I'll be honest I don't think the pixels have that exact feature. It does sound very helpful for that niche. I'll have to double check on the newer pixels, I'm still rocking a 4XL that has location based alerts but not an SOS feature.

4

MorgrainX OP t1_j1en9zy wrote

No, pixels cannot access satellites. They rely on mobile communication towers.

It's a good feature that can be a lifesaver when hiking/ in remote regions, so adding that is a good addition for a p8.

Not sure why you were down voted. Having recently moved to pixel from Samsung on the same network living at the same address, I can say for sure the network and even wifi strength on pixel 7 pro is quite weak compared to Samsung s22 ultra.
