“the NYXI Wizard’s joysticks will never experience drift. That’s because they rely on magnetic Hall Effect sensors to detect movements, instead of mechanical linkages, which wear out over time.”

This proven to be true?

They won't experience the specific wear that people identify as stick drift, but they are not magic. Physical parts will always wear out eventually, and depending on how they mapped these the smaller deadzone common to Hall Effect sticks means you'll start noticing that mechanical slop sooner. They can also be affected by repeated strong magnetic fields, but those aren't super common. They also can only track motion, not position, so you have to be more careful to never be touching to stick when powering on the device. You might remember that same phenomenon from some older controllers, Sega used hall effect joysticks for awhile, but hopefully these have standby power so it's not a frequent issue.

True. They will wear out physically eventually, but they should last much much longer than the Joycon.

The joycon issue is less that it's an analog stick and more that it's quite small and thus the drift becomes much more noticeable than on the pro controller or an Xbox/PS5/Deck. This clamp-on controller being much larger already insulates it from a lot of the common issues.

It's like saying "you'll never have flat tires with these tank treads!"

The two do the same thing in wholly separate ways.

This literally looks like those fan made iterations of dream consoles people used to post in the 2000s.

It looks like it won’t fit a GameCube since it’s attachable to the sides of the Switch like a joycon.

Nintendo is generally only backwards-compatible by one generation (example: Wii can play GameCube games but not N64 games), but there’s at least three remastered games in Super Mario All-Stars that are from older generations.

If you have a Switch emulator (I have no idea where to find that), it might work on a PC.

Got this. It’s entirely a gimmick. The GC’s rightside button layouts are incompatible with the standard diamond shaped pattern. Many games will require you to completely rethink your button presses. I put it down after one use and it’s been in a drawer ever since.

When? I did a quick google and the oldest article I could find was 5 days old

BrundleflyUrinalCake t1_j3ruz3y wrote

Should have clarified, I don’t have this exact item. I have a wireless switch controller made to look like a retro GC controller. The issue still stands though given that the button arrangement is the same.

I'm guessing you didnt play much Gamecube? The target market of this layout is for Gamecube and particularly Smash Melee vets who can't/don't want to change their muscle memory to the modern configuration

Skinny_Dan t1_j3r8k5x wrote

I feel like if you grew up with the GameCube and also own a Switch, this is a non-issue.

I mean, at the very worst, you could save this for games that are modern updates of games that were on GC. Like Smash, Mario Kart, etc. It would probably come very naturally.

Does it fit the hand better than a standard joycon? I'm just looking for something portable that's a better fit for my XXL hands. I tried the Hori Split Pad Pro and it was...okay until one side refused to pair.

My Wavebird and GC are in temp controlled storage 900 miles away. Great console, great memories.

Don’t know if you’ve tried a Satisfye grip, the switch just slides in and makes for a much more comfortable portable grip and doesn’t need you do have any other controllers than regular joycons

fottergraphs t1_j3saux8 wrote

Thanks a bunch stranger. I went ahead and ordered one just now, going to see how it works out. My Joycons don't have any drift yet as they're relatively new.

I almost never use my Switch docked (except for Mario Cart with my kids) and it basically lives in my duty bag. The next best thing I've found so far is a plastic piece that clips onto the Pro Controller and holds the screen above it.

Nice they also have some cases that hold the switch with the grip for travel. Been really happy with mine so far. I also picked up a portable dock and it lives in the grip now docked or handheld mode.

I tried a pro grip setup but found the weight distribution a bit uncomfortable on a longer session, was nice for heat distribution though.
