As far as I care, the updates ended this year when they required a meta account to use it.

The whole point of the Meta account was to stop forcing you from using your doxxed Facebook account. Why was that a negative?

BCCMNV t1_j3qzo1x wrote

Can’t get your Facebook account doxxed if you don’t have one.

And you cant use your quest if you dont have a facebook account? Or did your old oculus account still work?

Meta is shooting themselves in their foot. Their platform is already set to fail, now they are accelerating it.

How so? Quest has been discontinued since 2020. Why would they be shooting themselves in the foot by not producing updates for a product they havent been selling for over 4 years at that point?

When I buy an expensive tech gadget from a multi-billion dollar company, I expect it to be supported for more than a couple years. For some of us, this was a major purchase on par with buying a new computer

It still works, and it will still have access to the store for buying games. It will still be repaired under warranty if you have one, and I’m sure they’ll repair them out of warranty if you pay.

They’re just not adding new stuff to it. Did you buy the headset expecting new features or did you buy it for what it could already do? What features are missing that could even be added via software at this point?

Your headset will continue to work exactly as it does. If you expect long software support for anything, I would strongly advise not buying any first generation products. The first iPhone only got 3 years of software support too, yet people still used them well past that point.

Hell it's more like buying a new console, and those get updated for ages. Xbox One and PS4 are still getting software updates.

Hell the 360 got one in 2019.

Its still gonna work. My rift s works just fine eventho they stopped releasing updates years ago.

What's with all the negativity? Quest 1 is ancient in VR tech terms. The fact they supported updates with new features for four years is better than most cell phone companies.

I consider the Quest line as a VR console more than a mobile device.

So only 4 years of support is disappointing.

It wasn’t marketed to cutting edge VR enthusiasts. It was marketed to average people. Phones going out of service while they’re still useful is not an industry behavior to laud. It’s an anti-consumer money grab that contributes to huge piles of e-waste

medfreak t1_j3tgc6f wrote

The Quest 1 will continue to work just fine. It won't be getting any further updates. In a world where VR development is going to a break neck pace, and with all the costs that entails it is really not unreasonable.

ExultantSandwich t1_j3uqyfl wrote

These headsets are not e-waste, they just aren’t receiving new software updates… They still work? Please don’t throw out your headset because you’re mad you never received software you weren’t promised

It was pretty much dead when Quest 2 came out. I bought a Quest 1 because it was a pretty mind blowing achievement at the time, but it was pretty clearly a gen 1 product. The 835 SOC was woefully inadequate as far as longevity. Those OLED screens though...

BrutalHunny t1_j3u0q7e wrote

I pretty much only use it for porn so I still have the quest 1 because of the OLED screens. Still nothing out better.

Disgusting. Is this what you use this tech for? (can you pm me links for good stuff? cheers)

So glad the occlus will be available on some other platform in a couple years that doesn't require you to sign up for their shitty social media company.

BrutalHunny t1_j3u0hra wrote

This is unfortunate since the Quest 1 has an OLED display making it better than the Quest 2.
