Montréal
France for the indies (Dotemu) and not so indies (-> Ubisoft).
Neilpoleon t1_jacbtoj wrote
Yes both great ones! Despite the hate it gets, I do love my Ubisoft games so appreciative of both countries.
Did you see where Montreal is considering forcing employees to learn French. They are worried it will scare away and exclude great talent.

Japan imho. Lots of great devs (Capcom, from software, square enix, kojima production, etc) and one of my favourite series : Earth Defense Force!

Would probaply have to say japan. They got SquareEnix, Capcom and Shigeru Miyamoto. Cant get much better than that imo

They have dropped the ball on CyberPunk 2077, but there's no denying The Witcher 3 is one of the greatest rpgs of all time.

Czech Republic: a lot of great simulation games come from there like Kingdom Come Deliverance, Euro Truck Simulator 2, and Hobo Tough Life

Oh didn't realize they are from there as well! Just haven't played those games ever.

Is it already well known?
The best selling video game of all time was created by a Swedish developer, the second best a Scottish developer. Between them, they've sold more than the rest of the top ten combined.
ConceptualizedPotato t1_jacaqvg wrote
Ah yes, the famous "best selling video game" metric
Mithrawndo t1_jace0v5 wrote
If you're implying that this invalidates the metric somehow, I'd remind you that those games are Minceraft and GTA5; Two of the most popular and culturally significant games ever created, and two games for which every gamer knows the development studio's name.
I'd also point out that best selling != most profitable. The most profitable ones absolutely do come from Japan and the USA: Pokemon and CoD!
ohtetraket t1_jad4yhs wrote
I mean look at the games with the highest revenue it's not Pokemon or CoD.
Mithrawndo t1_jadxbwo wrote
Franchises; When accounting for sequels, merchandising and such, #1 and #2 are Pokemon and CoD.
Neilpoleon t1_jacbh3v wrote
I was more excluding the US and Japan so people give credit and attention to other countries.
Also I recognize the fallacy that a lot of big games now are really international efforts.
Sariefko t1_jachn5d wrote
All my favorites were mostly built in US. After that Japan. It's kinda simpler to build better game if you have more funds and your market pays more.

but if we exclude it, it leaves Poland and Ukraine. Witcher 3, Dying Light, Stalker.

It's definitely nice to see more developers entering the market since creating your own videogame is now much more accessible. It allows developers to pursue more unique concepts like Stray.
I agree that there are a lot of great games coming from countries that were previously part of the Soviet Union. I wonder what impact has on the games developed since a lot of them have a bit darker tone.
