Mario maker 2 on the switch did that. I bought the game for $80 cad, and then I had to buy Nintendo switch online to actually play people's online courses. It does make sense, but pisses me the fuck off

Yes and no.

I think with Game Pass and PS Now, we won’t be paying for single games for much longer. I think this’ll result in games being significantly shorter and more basic on release as they’ll not be getting as much money. They’ll then overcharge for DLC

This has technically been a thing for years. MMOs requiring monthly payments to play after purchasing the game have been and are still standard.

World of warcraft has been out for nearly 20 years. You have to pay a monthly fee to play it. Also buy the newest expansion which costs 50-60 euro around every 2 years.
