I feel like their reporting is not about games anymore. They constantly follow an agenda of their own. Be it political or a vendetta against some company or developer.

From kotaku, rock paper shotgun over eurogamer to ign. Honestly they all do not test and recommend games anymore. They‘d rather impose their world view on you and click bait with controversial „pieces“.

I think the last time I truly discovered a game through a journalist was when I was still buying magazines…

I haven't read a gaming magazine or visited a gaming site since like 2012. Feels like I get way better info from Youtubes honestly.

At this point 99% of gaming news that's relevant to my interests I'll hear about from Reddit or my friends, and I don't bother with reviews anymore when I can just watch raw gameplay on YouTube or Twitch.

I guess I still watch Zero Punctuation, but that's more for entertainment.

Just because Yahtzee doesn't like a game doesn't mean I will dislike a game.

Conversely, if Yahtzee does like a game, I most likely will too.

Escapist in general is putting out a lot of good content and reviews right now.

The only journalist channel that I ever watch / trust at all is Gameranx. Jake and Falcon are great.

I prefer real gamers over any other source of information or game reviews

Gaming “journalists” are just people that were so pathetic that Buzzfeed wouldn’t hire them.

I only check Steam reviews and a few YouTubers I trust regarding games quality. Video game journalists seem like they don't know what they are talking about most of the time.

The only person who should decide what you like is you? I do miss the days of Electronic Playground and real journalism showing game footage and doing reviews. But like you said, I can just YouTube footage now.

Do have any particular problem you can name? I think they're all right. Their reviews are sometimes corny, but those are reviews. Give us an example

So after decades licking boots of the industry we finally get actual journalism. Sounds great to me.

If you read or listen to Interviews from journalists that have written mags in the 90s and 00s almost everytime they complain that they worked to close to the industry and sometimes even felt like corruption/bribery. That is beginning to fade.

Hasn't gaming journalism as a whole been outwardly adversarial to their audience since gamergate? You're just now done with them?

I agree just like all the news put there. Trying to feed everyone with propaganda whether it is on the actual news or news about gaming. Funny thing is gaming is fun because ypu get away from all the politics but now politics is in movies and games. It is frustrating 😴

~48% upvote rate. I am glad I am not alone with this. I think I will move away from written reviews and simply watch footage on YouTube. Observe steam user recommendations…

I think I recognize your issue. There exists no such thing as "Gaming Journalists/Journalism."

These people are just bloggers. There is no standard to which they hold themselves. Lower your expectations.

Now lower them again...

Lol my guy… the media in general have lied in their news posts for literal decades. I seriously can’t believe anyone reads them anymore

Woah so your saying gaming journalism is doing actual journalism instead of just reviews and shit which are not in fact journalism?

−2

ajwin t1_jac8xd6 wrote

I think they are saying they are doing the journalism but ignoring the gaming part.. 🧐 It’s also possible that regurgitated propaganda isn’t journalism either.. Hmm..

Edit: better sentence structure

Do it’s basically I dont agree with the politics so it’s bad journalism.

People like the OP would read the jungle and go off about yellow journalism

IGN is literally the definition of very vanilla takes in gaming.....

And ehh, literally "YouTubers" are subject to the EXACT same vices. Do people not remember when a bunch of YouTuber's were singing the praises of CP2077 while also being legally denied the ability to use their own gameplay footage (or else CDPR would sue) masterfully creating a false narrative of the game's stability? At the end of the day, EVERYTHING will have a bias and that bias can easily be influenced. We are humans who crave constructing the world or narratives as we see fit. There can just simply not be a review that goes "Game does X, it tells the story of Y and it runs for Z amount of hours... computing score.... 6/10." Every game will elicit a reaction from us and that reaction is what determines the journalism/review.

Metacritic is the best to look at as its a good aggregate for the general consensus on a game.

What political agendas? I keep seeing this idea being thrown around and yet the only time I've seen something remotely political from games journalists in the past few years has been in the last few weeks when they have "the audacity" to report on why some people feel uncofortable with Atomic Hearts ties to the russian governme t - and even then most haven't taken a side.
