Mass Effect, to be clear I love this franchise but I feel like people get a little over their skis about how good the story is. Its solid sci-fi but it really isn't reinventing the wheel or introducing anything new to the genre.

Nothing ground breaking nothing revolutionary. Sub standard game play.

The TV show barely has any infected in it as well. Its not terrible it's just so damn average. I'll never understand it

As someone that's playing through the original Dark Souls games, they're a bit too overrated. Love Sekiro, Bloodborne, Elden Ring and the Demon's Souls remake. I didn't like Dark Souls 1 that much, and I'm not liking Dark Souls 3 right now and I'd say I'm like 40% done. These boss fights suck (so far. 5 "gank" bosses in a row? So dumb). At least DS 1 bosses were good. Haven't tried 2 but I've heard it's the worst so I don't look forward to it.

You can downvote me now.

Edit: well now I've officially beaten DS 1 & 3. I will say with DS 3 it got much better later on. Just hate those few bosses. The Princes fight was amazing though. I definitely like and respect these games, but I'd still say Sekiro and Bloodborne are better imo.

It's fine for you to not like something. It's fine for other people to like it.

What does labeling something as "overrated" do besides arrogantly belittling the people who enjoy that thing?

Half Life for me. It's not BAD, but it is just a really primitive linear shooter, entirely single player, and barely 10-15 hrs long. So nothing really amazing. But everyone is acting like these games were the second coming of Jesus, because you could stack a few boxes on top of each other or play fetch with a robot dog.

I mean… that’s what Sony was telling the courts?

It’s not like people were pulling it out of their ass as some sort of “win” for Microsoft.

On top of that, there were rumors (maybe evidence in filings?) that they were using the giant amount of money from CoD sales and mtx cash to massively fund their SP narrative games. It was implied that losing that cash flow would be detrimental to their bread-and-butter.

If you're asking about games in general; Dragon Age, The Witcher 3 and Disco Elysium all come to mind. I feel like those three games deliver more compelling story, characters, worlds and play with tropes related to their respective genres in much more creative ways than ME does.

However, if you're asking me for games that are specifically in the sci-fi rpg genre, I'm admittedly drawing some blanks rn. Like maybe KOTOR? But even then that's so heavily based in the greater Star Wars lore that I think I'd give the nod to ME. Mass Effect is kind of the gold standard sci-fi RPG game. But I think that could be due to the fact that the Sci-fi rpg genre hasn't been as popular or as explored as Fantasy rpgs.

I need a scale of how every franchise is rated, because you have kind of a point but like - most every Zelda game is still good and releases polished.

There’s so many franchises you can’t say that for… but maybe they’ve ruined their reps by now.

FeistyAndrea t1_jeflsde wrote

What’s funny to me here is that when I played Demon Souls I never thought it would go totally mainstream like it has.

I wouldn’t consider it overrated at all, but I also just don’t think it’s for everyone and was never meant to be thrown at everyone

Idk how the answer from everyone isn’t one of the sports franchises that release the same damn game every year just featuring different rosters.

Like - they sell so fucking much and put in zero effort. You can think TLOU or Souls is still overrated but those are on a whole other level.

System Shock would like a word with you. Then Strife. Then Terminator: Future Shock. Then probably another dozen or so early story-based FPS.

There is little that Half Life was the legitimate "first" to do. It just happened to do a whole bunch of things that had been done before but did them all very well.

I prefer the older Final Fantasy games as well, but they've finally nailed what they've been wanting to do since Advent Children was released - the free flowing super fast combat with lots of flashy lights that stop you from seeing what the fuck is going on.

One of those games I play for the story not the game mechanics I guess.

The original HL was a kind of second coming of Jesus for single player FPS but more so for online gaming in the late 90s early 00s imo. It had some great popular mods and the obvious TFC and CS came from it.

Half Life 2 was a cool game but the gaming industry had learned and moved on and it never left the same impression as the first game.

ElephantGlum t1_jeftsb5 wrote

I should of specified Dragon Age 1, because yes I agree with you 2 & 3 were mediocre at best.

As to it being better than ME2, I think that's pretty subjective. I've probably enjoyed ME2 more than DA 1 and have played ME2 more than DA1. If I'm comparing the two objectively, I maintain that DA1 has a more interesting story, your player character interacts with the world in a much more fun and dynamic way, DA1 plays with some common fantasy tropes in interesting ways (especially for a fantasy RPG of that time). The characters/companions are probably pretty comparable. Gameplay is way too different to really compare.

I still stand by my statement that people overrate ME's story content.

Ignoring the obvious choices like FIFA and Call of Duty, I really think Pokémon is overrated now.

I played from Red and Blue through to Arceus and honestly the games stink of a lack of effort put into them. The stories are always the same and I don't find the world's overly engaging.

Arceus was a total refreshment and it was great but other than that I don't think there's been a great Pokémon game since Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

I couldn’t disagree more. I have several thousand hours into the souls series ds3 being my favourite game of all time.

I understand it’s not for everyone and it can certainly take some time to really get a good feel for the combat and the story and world can be very confusing but once it all clicks it really clicks at least for me.

To each their own though I could go on for years about exactly why I think they are among some of the best games ever made but at the end of the day we all have our own taste

sumpfkraut666 t1_jefz95s wrote

The argument was terribly explained but it has a point. Half life was revolutionary in that you played the opening cutscene. It wasn't the first shooter with a story that is more complex than "shoot enemy" but it was the first to tell a complex story (mostly) through gameplay. Properly using the medium is part of the art of making video games.

I probably agree with this for the series of FromSoft Souls-likes as a whole. FromSoft games are so odd to me.

Like, Elden Ring is without a doubt one of the greatest games I’ve ever played. However, the original Dark Souls is without a doubt one of the worst games I’ve ever played. And most of the other entries fall in the middle between ‘ok’ to ‘good’. I’d never thought of any FromSoft game to be above an 8/10 until Elden Ring, which is a legitimate 10/10 for me. I haven’t played every entry in the series, but I’ve played Bloodborne, Dark Souls, and Demon’s Souls with each one of these varying in quality for me. Bloodborne being solid, Demon’s Souls being genuinely pretty good, and (again) Dark Souls being terrible.

Critics and fans seem to never rate any single FromSoft Souls-like game lesser than a 9 or so. But I just don’t get it. The quality is not at all that consistent.

jumpmanryan t1_jeg06jb wrote

Pokémon is the easy answer for me.

Especially post-Black & White, the series has regressed so much. It’s absolutely insane that critics still gave Sun/Moon and Sword/Shield high praise. And the only reason Scarlett/Violet didn’t receive critical acclaim was due to the performance. But those games have SO MANY glaring issues besides just performance. I genuinely can’t wrap my head around the praise that the series still receives. I perfectly comprehend the popularity and sales, but the critical praise is beyond me.

I can't imagine what bosses are gank bosses for you and how are there 5 in a row.

Greatwood, sage, deacons, watchers and Volnir? Deacons and Volnir isn't even a fair fight. Sage is technically alone. Greatwood's dudes can be stunned by literally rolling into them.

Anyways, bosses will become much better from this point.

It's just annoying af cause 5 fights in a row It's me vs multiple dudes and a boss. Even Pontiff called in another guy. They all have you fighting multiples. At least Yhorm, Old Demon King and Aldritch didn't have that. So far the best thing I'm enjoying about this one other than the gameplay is the throwback to Anor Londo.
