Edit. Why am I downvoted? lol
Mission failed, we'll get em' next time.
Dark Souls
Definitely. Proven by the simple fact that some people think that it becoming an Xbox exclusive is gonna cause the downfall of Playstation.
Pokémon
Mass Effect, to be clear I love this franchise but I feel like people get a little over their skis about how good the story is. Its solid sci-fi but it really isn't reinventing the wheel or introducing anything new to the genre.
A good pick that isn't just an EA sports game or COD.
I agree with you.
TLOU
Nothing ground breaking nothing revolutionary. Sub standard game play.
The TV show barely has any infected in it as well. Its not terrible it's just so damn average. I'll never understand it
Gears of War
That’s Sony stans for you I suppose.
I plan on playing tlou on pc once the port isn’t bugged to hell
Mass Effect
As someone that's playing through the original Dark Souls games, they're a bit too overrated. Love Sekiro, Bloodborne, Elden Ring and the Demon's Souls remake. I didn't like Dark Souls 1 that much, and I'm not liking Dark Souls 3 right now and I'd say I'm like 40% done. These boss fights suck (so far. 5 "gank" bosses in a row? So dumb). At least DS 1 bosses were good. Haven't tried 2 but I've heard it's the worst so I don't look forward to it.
You can downvote me now.
Edit: well now I've officially beaten DS 1 & 3. I will say with DS 3 it got much better later on. Just hate those few bosses. The Princes fight was amazing though. I definitely like and respect these games, but I'd still say Sekiro and Bloodborne are better imo.
It pains me to say this because I really enjoyed some of the games in the series, but when looking at the series overall... Final Fantasy.
It's definitely a fine game but fans of it treat it as the best game that ever existed.
They also hate the sequel and sent death threats to women associated with it 🤡
I think that's fair. They try to innovate but it doesn't always work out.
of all the takes on this topic, this opinion might be the worst, even if you don't like the game.
it literally redefined the whole genre of action-rpgs/adventures after its release.
100% agree. The story isn't bad but it's just another basic zombie story. Plus the gameplay is petty meh.
Fortnite. Too many trash talkers
Assassins Creed.
Call of Duty.
I don't care, I still think it's overrated.
Not everyone likes the button-timing roll-mashing mayhem. I don't care for it most of the time.
World of Warcraft
I love mass effect, but yeah.
It peaked with 3
it's not just about that.
it begins with the buttonlayout that's now used in those games, over how armor works up until storytelling and environmental design.
Madden
It’s like buying the same Zelda game every year except the bosses have different names.
I respect you opinion but I definetly disagree.
Legend of Zelda
Every game except for the first 2 and BOTW is a reskinned Ocarina of time or Link to the past with a gimmick
It would definitely lower sales though
Why must people post so many of these quit having fun topics?
It's fine for you to not like something. It's fine for other people to like it.
What does labeling something as "overrated" do besides arrogantly belittling the people who enjoy that thing?
>Its solid sci-fi but
Interesting. Maybe you can name a couple of games with the plot better and more thorough than ME?
Couldn’t agree more
It isn't inherently belittling to criticize game franchises.
Half Life for me. It's not BAD, but it is just a really primitive linear shooter, entirely single player, and barely 10-15 hrs long. So nothing really amazing. But everyone is acting like these games were the second coming of Jesus, because you could stack a few boxes on top of each other or play fetch with a robot dog.
I mean… that’s what Sony was telling the courts?
It’s not like people were pulling it out of their ass as some sort of “win” for Microsoft.
On top of that, there were rumors (maybe evidence in filings?) that they were using the giant amount of money from CoD sales and mtx cash to massively fund their SP narrative games. It was implied that losing that cash flow would be detrimental to their bread-and-butter.
FromSoftware games. Even after giving them a chance and learning how to play and “git good” I still didn’t have any fun.
I definitely get what you're saying.
I think a lot of the hype was related to Valve, and the game's worldbuilding. I personally find the lore more interesting than the game itself.
Fortnite though is that really a franchise? Just a few maps, loads of MTX and screaming kids. I'll pass.
Yeah, it feels like a chore.

If you're asking about games in general; Dragon Age, The Witcher 3 and Disco Elysium all come to mind. I feel like those three games deliver more compelling story, characters, worlds and play with tropes related to their respective genres in much more creative ways than ME does.
However, if you're asking me for games that are specifically in the sci-fi rpg genre, I'm admittedly drawing some blanks rn. Like maybe KOTOR? But even then that's so heavily based in the greater Star Wars lore that I think I'd give the nod to ME. Mass Effect is kind of the gold standard sci-fi RPG game. But I think that could be due to the fact that the Sci-fi rpg genre hasn't been as popular or as explored as Fantasy rpgs.
Halo or COD. Both are just mid
Man, it pains me that AC has become Ubisofts CoD
The last of us
Yeah I couldn't get into Sekiro and thought Elden Ring would be different and gave that a try. It was fun for a while, but causes way too much anxiety and needless frustration.
Definitely.
Nah, just skyim. Oblivion was the shit.
My friends were way into the first one so I played online with them and HATED that game. Felt like I had to fire 1,000 bullets to kill an enemy but I seemed to die instantly
I need a scale of how every franchise is rated, because you have kind of a point but like - most every Zelda game is still good and releases polished.
There’s so many franchises you can’t say that for… but maybe they’ve ruined their reps by now.
The big thing about HL is that it was the first shooter with an actual story, not just running around shooting waves of enemies. It was revolutionary in that sense
What’s funny to me here is that when I played Demon Souls I never thought it would go totally mainstream like it has.
I wouldn’t consider it overrated at all, but I also just don’t think it’s for everyone and was never meant to be thrown at everyone
Gran Turismo - I love my driving games but this is far from 'The Real Driving Simulator '
Yeah Im a final fantasy 7 (original) and 10 guy, absolutely love them to death but the final fantasy I didn't like which I won't list I really didn't like them.

Opposing Force CTF:
HL Deathmatch:
HL2 Deathmatch:
HL Deathmatch source:
HL Decay:
Why is this asked every week on this sub?
Idk how the answer from everyone isn’t one of the sports franchises that release the same damn game every year just featuring different rosters.
Like - they sell so fucking much and put in zero effort. You can think TLOU or Souls is still overrated but those are on a whole other level.
Mass effect.
i totally agree. it’s completely fine as a game but for me the hype is unfounded.
I think every FIFA player would agree, and yet we still keep coming back. Tf is wrong with us
From software souls games
They are good games, VERY GOOD GAMES, but SO MUCH PEOPLE takes them as the best games ever of all time, they are good but far from perfect
Eh, everybody has there preference and aren't wrong. Personally loved Skyrim and enjoyed Morrowind, but wasn't into Oblivion. As a known controversial option in the community, I really like ESO.
Uncharted. ( bring on the downvotes)
Yeah they’ve had some pretty bad decisions I’m the last 15 or so years since FF13. I am fairly pleased with the stride they seem to have found with 14, 7R and how 16 if looking as it shapes up for release. I’m really hoping that maybe they will find that new style they’ve been searching for.
Gotta get that karma
The Witcher. Good action game but garbage rpg.
Halo
WWE
Fortnite
Oh hey it's today's "Post your unpopular gaming opinion!" thread.
>entirely single player
You say that like it's in even the slightest way a bad thing.
Pokemon
The fact that scarlet and violet is broken in every sense of the word and still sold well should tell you everything
I don't agree with Dragon Age. There was exactly one good Dragon Age game, and even it wasn't better than ME2.
>The big thing about HL is that it was the first shooter with an actual story
System Shock would like a word with you. Then Strife. Then Terminator: Future Shock. Then probably another dozen or so early story-based FPS.
There is little that Half Life was the legitimate "first" to do. It just happened to do a whole bunch of things that had been done before but did them all very well.
Because not everyone is on Reddit 24/7 and some people have similar questions.
Yes. I know the search feature exists. Different people will comment and give their own opinions at different times
I always thought this was an underrated franchise. But I'm not including 4 and 5, those two sucked. I never hear people talk about gears of war and it's quite a bummer
Seriously! I like the concept but the grind is mind numbing and takes out all the fun
Breath of the Wild... it's alright.
Mario
For me its because I love the sport and this is the best game for it. Efootball sucks and no one can tell me otherwise.
Fallout, elder scrolls
I prefer the older Final Fantasy games as well, but they've finally nailed what they've been wanting to do since Advent Children was released - the free flowing super fast combat with lots of flashy lights that stop you from seeing what the fuck is going on.
One of those games I play for the story not the game mechanics I guess.
Without a doubt Madden
Haven't played it tbh, but haven't heard good things about it. I know there were plenty of good PES games, but man I just could not deal with the lack of licensed teams and players. Bad enough having Napoli FC, Roma FC, and the likes in recent FIFA's.
Grand Theft Auto, Zelda, Pokémon, Mario Kart, Far Cry, Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil
Daring today huh?
The original HL was a kind of second coming of Jesus for single player FPS but more so for online gaming in the late 90s early 00s imo. It had some great popular mods and the obvious TFC and CS came from it.
Half Life 2 was a cool game but the gaming industry had learned and moved on and it never left the same impression as the first game.
HL Deathmatch was awesome.
There is no gears after 3, there is Gears of Duty. Just like there Call of Halo 4.
That's the old reputation it had, it became huge after No Build mode and it'll explode when game designers will put their hands into UEFN
[deleted]
I should of specified Dragon Age 1, because yes I agree with you 2 & 3 were mediocre at best.
As to it being better than ME2, I think that's pretty subjective. I've probably enjoyed ME2 more than DA 1 and have played ME2 more than DA1. If I'm comparing the two objectively, I maintain that DA1 has a more interesting story, your player character interacts with the world in a much more fun and dynamic way, DA1 plays with some common fantasy tropes in interesting ways (especially for a fantasy RPG of that time). The characters/companions are probably pretty comparable. Gameplay is way too different to really compare.
I still stand by my statement that people overrate ME's story content.
As a Pokémon fan:
Definitely Pokémon.
People are just listing games that fell off. The true answer is any EA sports game
Not for much longer.
Honestly I rarely hear people talk about Gran Turismo these days.
We'll all still just buy the new EA Sports FC game when it comes out, or whatever it ends up being called
Surprised I had to scroll all this way down to find Grand Theft Auto.
It's my favorite franchise but also by far one of the most popular of all time so I thought more people would think it's overrated.
Ignoring the obvious choices like FIFA and Call of Duty, I really think Pokémon is overrated now.
I played from Red and Blue through to Arceus and honestly the games stink of a lack of effort put into them. The stories are always the same and I don't find the world's overly engaging.
Arceus was a total refreshment and it was great but other than that I don't think there's been a great Pokémon game since Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
Fifa is gone this year since they didnt renew
What do you plan on doing with this information and why do you care?
Also the answers are the same every time
I couldn’t disagree more. I have several thousand hours into the souls series ds3 being my favourite game of all time.
I understand it’s not for everyone and it can certainly take some time to really get a good feel for the combat and the story and world can be very confusing but once it all clicks it really clicks at least for me.
To each their own though I could go on for years about exactly why I think they are among some of the best games ever made but at the end of the day we all have our own taste
As I said, I’m not on here 24/7 so I don’t see other ‘answers the same every time’
Because I’m curious
Yet you claim to be aware of the search function.
It's a weak attempt at karma whoring
I don’t know why you’re upset with this, and I already answered this too
Different times provide different answers from different people (hopefully) on different days
Go on with your day
I've been gaming since Atari 2600 and never heard of strife or terminator future shock but thanks for enlightening me.
It is always the same answers. Reddit threads dont disappear after a certain amount of time. Anyone can answer at any time of day
The argument was terribly explained but it has a point. Half life was revolutionary in that you played the opening cutscene. It wasn't the first shooter with a story that is more complex than "shoot enemy" but it was the first to tell a complex story (mostly) through gameplay. Properly using the medium is part of the art of making video games.
I probably agree with this for the series of FromSoft Souls-likes as a whole. FromSoft games are so odd to me.
Like, Elden Ring is without a doubt one of the greatest games I’ve ever played. However, the original Dark Souls is without a doubt one of the worst games I’ve ever played. And most of the other entries fall in the middle between ‘ok’ to ‘good’. I’d never thought of any FromSoft game to be above an 8/10 until Elden Ring, which is a legitimate 10/10 for me. I haven’t played every entry in the series, but I’ve played Bloodborne, Dark Souls, and Demon’s Souls with each one of these varying in quality for me. Bloodborne being solid, Demon’s Souls being genuinely pretty good, and (again) Dark Souls being terrible.
Critics and fans seem to never rate any single FromSoft Souls-like game lesser than a 9 or so. But I just don’t get it. The quality is not at all that consistent.
Pokémon is the easy answer for me.
Especially post-Black & White, the series has regressed so much. It’s absolutely insane that critics still gave Sun/Moon and Sword/Shield high praise. And the only reason Scarlett/Violet didn’t receive critical acclaim was due to the performance. But those games have SO MANY glaring issues besides just performance. I genuinely can’t wrap my head around the praise that the series still receives. I perfectly comprehend the popularity and sales, but the critical praise is beyond me.
Oh man there's so many, COD, FIFA, Assassin's creed, a big one imo is Last of Us. My friend has both LOU games and I tried playing, but they just bore me to death. The show was cool though.
Assassin’s Creed imho, I’m not saying it’s bad, it just isn’t as good as some say it is
I really enjoy GTA but am I little worried since the Dr. Dre dlc that was really just celeb name dropping and a bunch of cut scenes. As of late they seem to be lacking in the charm (snark) that the franchise is known for.
That could be the lack of Dan Houser and Lazlow.
Every take in this thread is dogshit
Half Life's story isn't that complex. It's basically Doom's story. "Oh no we opened a portal and shit went to hell. Also there are some bad humans too."
Mainline games yes, but rom-hacks and spin-offs I don’t think I agree. Those are usually creative
Splatoon. People shit on EA with their sports games but Splatoon 3 is Splatoon 2, which is Splatoon 1.
You should play Sekiro then, arguably their best one, or at least on par with ER
I’ll definitely play it at some point! I plan to play through all the series, just slowly.
Agreed, I think I've probably played just as many fan hacks as I have mainline games by this point.
I think it has something to do with it. Which makes me a little unenthused for VI. Which I'll still play because I love the franchise, but if its more tongue in cheek pop culture references like we got in V I'll be kind of disappointed.
Halo Assassins Creed Horizon
I can't imagine what bosses are gank bosses for you and how are there 5 in a row.
Greatwood, sage, deacons, watchers and Volnir? Deacons and Volnir isn't even a fair fight. Sage is technically alone. Greatwood's dudes can be stunned by literally rolling into them.
Anyways, bosses will become much better from this point.
[deleted]
It's just annoying af cause 5 fights in a row It's me vs multiple dudes and a boss. Even Pontiff called in another guy. They all have you fighting multiples. At least Yhorm, Old Demon King and Aldritch didn't have that. So far the best thing I'm enjoying about this one other than the gameplay is the throwback to Anor Londo. Seeing >!the giant blacksmith!< hurt.
Have you tried Temtem or the nexomon game? Pokemon inspired games I've thought about trying them
🤣 ight fair enough. I can agree with halo, even though halo is my favorite (halo 2 mainly). Halo 4 and 5 just... damn I hated them. I can go on a long rant on how fucked halo was from 4 and afterwards
Dead space ‘remake’
‘Cause I don’t like very much walking around and making a search many times in same field.
You can't just say that pontiff summoning mirror image that telegraphs his imminent attacks made the fight worse
It's still 2 sets of attacks to dodge. Didn't make it bad, just more annoying
[removed]
A comment like this, I have nothing to say against it, cause I know my favorite franchise is like this, Halo. I grew up with it, I remember the days when people called it Gaylo. It's my favorite but at the same time I know it's overrated... (I won't include halo 4 and 5 cause those were terrible)
Is this the game's fault, though?
I think all the year in/year out EA sports titles would qualify
AC used to be so good and had actual care behind the games. Now it's just a husky of it's former self. Hey at least we can replay the ezio games for the 20th time.
Arguably no, toxic gaming pervades the entire industry
I wanted to use a certain skill in Diablo 2 and got called a noob because it wasn't to the play archetype (whereas I wanted to play using a skill I liked the look of, reason why I loved D3 so much I tried most things, found my niche, and did mad damage)
The whole get good or uninstall crowd, campers and griefers, buff/nerf arguments because my ow character got pwned once by your character, and I havent even touched on politics, whole gamergate saga, and cash hungry studios and their rampant sexuam harrasment
I don’t think so, is Final Fantasy particularly highly regarded these days?
Every franchise that releases yearly. You cant make a good game in one year...
Yes, and all of those things are terrible.
“Let’s not have a story, let’s instead have a backstory novel written in tiny text whose font size cannot be increased.”
[deleted]
Xbox has said that they wouldnt make COD an exclusive.
Sony would probably make more money if they wouldn’t make so many exclusives
The irony
I've played a decent chunk of TemTem, definitely recommend it. Gameplay is a good chunk better than Pokemon and it's also way better looking too, although it's not without its faults. I tried the Nexomon demo a while ago and was pretty underwhelmed.
