Nope. I don't even play games with battle passes anymore. Like I quit playing Overwatch when they started putting the unlockable characters behind the last step of the the battlepass pretty much making it p2w (or at least p2u) because I don't have the time or mental capacity to grind in such a toxic environment for an entire season just for a stupid hero/skin. I'd rather not play at all.

Lightspeed_Lunatic t1_jecj4eu wrote

Similar situation for me. I started playing Splatoon 3 when it launched, and since then, I can't stand paid battlepasses. Anything that has a paid pass and/or doesn't give you any way to get items you missed later on feels so scummy and anti-consumer to me now.

(Splat 3 has something similar to a battlepass, but it's 100% free, and you can get anything you missed after the season ends.)

They're impossible for me to finish in the limited amount of time given unless that is the only game I play.

And I DO NOT like the feeling of having to get something done by X date, I get enough of that at work.

None.

Battlepasses do not equal gameplay or fun.

Just one: Rocket League Rocket Pass. Throughout the season you earn enough points to buy the pass for the next season. So I paid 10 bucks years ago and have been coasting on it since.

Me too. Only ever bought the first Rocket Pass! I don't even know how many of em there was, but it was a 10$ well invested, for a 20$ game at the time.

It such a great setup. Playstation gives you two free games a month so I got Rocket League free back in 2015. Probably the only free game I've gotten that I still casual play on.

I only have Destiny 2. I check the Rocket League one when a new season comes up, but I haven't paid to activate the premium tier since like... Season 3? I also check the Marvel Snap one, haven't gone Premium on that one in a couple months.

At this point I feel like D2 should be viewed as an annual subscription game. Certainly the majority of regular players purchase the Annual Expansion Deluxe edition. Plus the amount of content that comes with each season really puts other games to shame.

1

arlondiluthel t1_jef6vdp wrote

It essentially is. Without buying the content, you basically get the new (and/or returning) location, one mission, and the "basic" upgrades/improvements and loot. I tell people who are interested in the game that they should still use the free-to-play offerings to get a feel for the basic gameplay mechanics, but expect to buy content if you like the game.

I recently had almost 8 at once. Fortnite, COD, Rocket League, Valorant, Dead by Daylight, Halo Infinite, Apex Legends, and Fall Guys.

Now after finishing none of them I have finally learned my lesson. Although it’s nice I could continue finishing the Halo one without a time constraint.

This will get me downvotes but the idea of battle passes isn’t so bad, the problem is the time it takes to complete them. I think Halo does a great job at making battle passes seem worth it.

The idea of battle passes is fucking terrible

“Give us even more money for things we easily could have just put in the game, but we need to make our shareholders happier each quarter so we need you to spend more on this random skin that you probably won’t even use”

Didn’t downvote you I just can’t fathom how someone thinks they’re a good idea.

Zombienerd300 t1_jecvdt1 wrote

Battle passes for a $70 game sure. I can behind the idea that they suck. However, for a FTP game and even a $20 game I think it’s fine. Which aside from COD, all of the games aforementioned are all FTP or $20 (DbD)

9thGearEX OP t1_jee6inj wrote

Here's my reasoning for thinking they're a good idea for some games:

Overwatch. The first game was a paid boxed product and only had loot boxes for the recurrent monetization, but they could be earned for free by playing the game. The end result was that no-one bought the loot boxes so the game stopped generating income, which meant they couldn't justify making new content for the game.

When the game switched over to Overwatch 2 it also went free-to-play, removed the lootboxes and implemented a premium battlepass and direct-purchase store for cosmetics. This meant the game was now generating regular income that has allowed the devs to devote more resources to making new content and doing regular balance patches - which were the problems that caused Overwatch 1 to die off.

The unfortunate truth for live service games where new content is expected is that they need to generate recurrent income, can't expect the devs to work for free. I agree that for a paid boxed product paid battlepasses are rarely a good idea but for free-to-play games I think they're probably the best form of monetization when paired alongside a direct-purchase store.

9thGearEX OP t1_jeanmir wrote

I'm with you there man, battlepasses really don't offend me so long as they respect my time.

8 is a LOT though - I thought I was bad with 4! I only really get the BP if I'm sure I'll finish it; Halo, Overwatch and PTCGL only really ask that you play like 2 games per day to finish the battlepass with weeks to spare and I usually finish the Destiny pass in about 3 weeks.

Zombienerd300 t1_jeao2zy wrote

You just reminded me that I had 9. I also got the Overwatch battle pass with Junker Queen Zeus outfit. Never finished that one either.

Halo Infinite (they never go away and I like Season 3 so wanna kinda give a cookie to 343) and CoD but I’m not going to re-up season 3 unless something big happens.

I play numerous games with a battle pass but I don’t get a BP unless I know I’m gonna finish it.

Turns out you don’t have to engage with the paid aspect of live service games and you can still have as much fun given the gameplay is free.

9thGearEX OP t1_jee741j wrote

Zuam9 t1_jee4qoj wrote

Never bought one, I see the appeal in them if you’re planning to play only one game the entire time.

I don’t see a problem with battle passes, so long as it’s only cosmetic items on them. I only have a problem with BPs when they have p2w items on them because that’s then unfair for both the people who don’t want yo buy it and those without enough time to complete it. If it’s just a cosmetic BP then it’s no big deal to those who can’t buy it and although annoying for those who bought it’s still not going to harm their progress if they don’t complete it.

Battle passes aren’t inherently bad, pay to win battle basses are. The cosmetic ones I don’t see a problem with because that’s then, you don’t like it, don’t buy it since it won’t harm your progress in the game you shouldn’t care so much. If you buy it and don’t complete it that’s on you, either shouldn’t have bought it unless you was going to finish it or you should have finished it.

2

9thGearEX OP t1_jee5ahn wrote

The Halo Infinite battlepass is probably the best one tbh. Only cosmetics, never expires after you buy it and gives you enough credits to buy the next one once you complete it. Also not a colossal time-sync. 10 ish matches per week will have you finishing it with plenty of time to spare.

Both Destiny and Overwatch put exotics/heroes behind their battlepasses (instantly unlocked for premium, free track has them fairly deep in) but these can be unlocked fairly easily after the season is over. Not ideal but if it means we get content regularly then I don't think it's a big deal.

None but I am currently playing 2 games that have them:

  1. Overwatch 2, where it's all cosmetic. It doesn't matter much to someone like me who has 100% of the Overwatch 1 stuff (pricing it out, it's tens of thousands of dollars). I honestly want to sell my account.

  2. Marvel Snap, where the best decks are almost always only accessibly via battle pass cards. The alternative is to wait months for the cards to enter the basic rotation, at which point their decks will have been nerfed/balanced. You can definitely pay to win but winning is pretty meaningless. It comes with almost zero reward.

1

tehsax t1_jeddj3l wrote

Even if you buy the Snap BP for the card, you still have to have the other cards necessary to make the deck work. I've just started last month, and have been playing every day for the last 6 weeks. I'm collector level 650 or something and I'm missing most of the cards necessary to build any of the meta decks. It really only makes sense to always go for the BP if you have most of the cards anyway. If you don't, the card included with the BP may even be completely useless. Technically it's a pay to win mechanic, but in reality it's probably not for most people.

I used to have one with Warzone. They used to have it where if you play enough, you can win back enough in game cash through the season pass to “buy” the next one. That lasted about 6 months for me, because they changed how much in game cash you can win, so I’m not buying another one.

I will stand by this statement until the day I die:

Battlepasses are a predatory plague on the videogame industry. They reel you in to mindlessly grind them so that they can ensure you're constantly playing. They're bs microtransactions, which force you to grind what you just paid for. And, they've done nothing but reduce the quality and quantity of content in games bc dumbass free road maps, which lead to a game getting like 2 new maps a year.

Active? None, never. If I like the game and play it a lot I buy it before the season ends and I hopefully reached the maximum level in it and the rewards are relevant. Especially if you earn enough premium currency to just buy the next one. If the game does not allow for that or at least a fraction of the price or to earn levels without having it and getting all the rewards afterwards fuck it, fuck the game and their publishers.

Well said.

I think r/gaming can be split into two solid groups:

  1. Those who genuinely think the consensus of r/gaming is representative of the thoughts of the majority of gamers.
  2. Those who seem to take some sort of contrarian pride in the fact that their opinions are not representative of the majority.

I also never ever ever bought a battle pass in my life. Like, explicitly battle pass. I on occasion bought a bundle or something like that which included a battle pass, but not as an individual purchase for its own sake.

Personally I think you literally have to be brainwashed or brain damaged to buy a battle pass, especially at the prices most companies are asking. The dollar to content value, compared to a core game, is almost always beyond abysmal.

−2

9thGearEX OP t1_jeaozpz wrote

Can't speak for other games as I don't pay attention to their BP but Overwatch, Destiny, Halo and PTCGL Battlepasses are all pretty good value imo.

Overwatch and Halo give good skins in their passes and Halo specifically rewards you with enough currency to get the next BP for free.

Destiny gives great rewards like new weapons, skins and resources. Most Destiny players buy the Deluxe Expansion yearly which includes the expansion and all 4 season passes for the year. Destiny also delivers a TON of content in its seasons - they put other games seasons to shame if you ask me.

PTCGL essentially doesn't have a paid BP. They flat out just give you the currency to buy the "premium" battlepass and there's no way to actually pay money for the in-game currency. Pretty fair.
