Hi everyone, I want to play a good FPS and the one I’ve had my eyes on is Borderlands, thing is I’ve only got The Handsome Edition and that comes with the 2nd one and the Pre Sequel. I was just wondering if I need to play the first Borderlands before playing the second one.
Yeah, BL1’s story is awful and while the gameplay was incredible for the time, they’ve really advanced a lot in gunplay and the random generation of guns
This... Borderlands 1 is sluggish and unrefined compared to 2, the writing and humour is on point in 2. The Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep is also one of the best DLCs I've ever played. The pre-sequel is a bad miss in my opinion and has a lot of weird Aussie humour.
As an Aussie, it makes me cringe listening to the pre sequel's dialogue. Especially strange since it was made by 2k Australia who should have known better.
Yeah it's sad to see a studio get killed off but after the pre sequel I understand.
I don't even think the game was that bad! They did interesting things with the skill trees like seeing Wilhelm slowly transforming into a machine and claptrap being... Claptrap..
Much better than the skill trees we got for borderlands 3, which had the best weapons of any borderlands game to date.
I haven't had a chance to play borderlands 3 yet but I'm looking forward to it. The pre sequel had some fun mechanics but the dialogue just killed it for me.

You don’t need to. The first one shows it’s age a bit. 2 does a good job at re introducing all the key characters. I would say it’s worth playing 1 at some point though, but it will feel bare bones compared to 2.

BL1 with all the DLC was pretty great. I remember more of that game than most I've played. If you're going to play it at all, definitely play it first. I'd say it's worth it if you can.
The playable characters in 1 are the characters giving you missions in 2. You don’t miss much in terms of story by playing 2 first, and 2 has a much much more detailed story anyway.
There’s no in-game benefit to playing them in order, and honestly you can skip 1 completely, 2 is a better game.
Yeah that’s the general consensus, and that’s cool, then bringing back the characters from the first one, I love stuff like that.
I just bought this pack for Switch. Played 2 in the past and liked it, tried 1 and it was good, but the real value was all the DLC for the second game.
Go straight to 2. 1 is fine but 2 is a classic.
You don't really have to. There's going to be characters and references from the first game you might miss, but who plays BL for the story anyway.
It's worth a playthrough though just because the classes feel different.
BL is one of those weird franchises where I feel the DLCs stories are considerably better than the mains for the most part
Like for BL1 the Robot Revolution and General Knoxx DLCs are fantastic, BL2 has the Scarlett DLC and Assault on Dragon Keep, TPS with Claptastic Voyage DLC, and BL3 with the Fuster Cluck, Bounty of Blood and Handsome Jackpot DLCs
I remember little about the story of BL1 but the DLC improved on the game heavily. General Knoxx was my favorite character to come out of BL1 because of the DLC.
Nope, you'll be good. It wouldn't hurt to watch a quick summary of the first one though. The second is one of the funniest games of all time. Tina is very likely going to be your favorite character. Idk if the dungeons and dragons DLC is included (I'd hope so at this point), but make sure to play it. That is one of the few DLCs I've ever bought that I felt was well worth the money.
not really. you could watch a quick recap on youtube or something. the first one really was just kind of a disjoined collection of stories. even at the beginning of two they give you a recap of one that honestly is probably good enough. there's just some characters that pop up that you are supposed to recognize but many of their personalities are kind of new for two and really weren't fleshed out in 1 anyways.
While Borderlands is a good game, Borderlands 2 is much better, I would recommend playing through all of BL2, and if you like that a lot, then you might think of BL1. There is not enough plot points missing form the first game that you will feel lost in the second game. Make sure to try out the BL2 DLC tha is all includied in the handome edition, it is really good, and has really good loot.
I've seen like 40 minutes of bl1 game play whereas I've beaten bl2 many times. The games all take place in the same universe and generally follow the same characters but each has it's own self contained story (if you even pay attention to it)
I'd go for the first one and get the enhanced edition. It's my favorite, even if it was less than 2. It's a classically good game, and the charm is what made everyone fall in love with it.
The gunplay is better in 2 and on BUUUT 1 is vry good and the characters are awesome
U dnt need to play it like I never did at first, it's sorta loosely connected by just the fact that ur all vault hunters and Marcus drives you at the beginning
You don't have to play the first one. The gameplay is quite different between the first and the others. Start with 2 and then if you're really hooked, you can go back and play the first one
My first game was bl2. Didn’t play 1 till way after and I just rushed though it to finish it. 2 is by far the best out of the series. 3 is good but not better than 2. You probably won’t like playing 1 if you play 2 first.

The characters in BL2, presequel and BL1 are completely different except for a couple characters (in BL2 one of the people who guides you and gives you quests is the character you play in BL1), however, I wouldn't say its mandatory to play BL1 first.. the 2nd one is the best game out of them all in my opinion. Definitevly a very good fun game.
There are loads of recurring characters from 1 in 2 and many nods to others in quests and recorders etc

I'd recommend playing them both starting with 1. The secret armory of general knoxx dlc for the first game is one of the best dlcs ever. Its a fantastic chill game.
BL2 has a lot more enemy variety. Of course. They stepped it up with their second installment.

the DLC for the first game is a bit lacklustre in comparison
but if you ever intend to play the first, I would play it first
it'll feel.....lacking if you go back to it after getting used to BL2
I would recommend playing the first game. It has aged, but it's not the worst. Playing the first game will also help give a proper connection to the characters rather than just watching all the cutscenes. And it would help cement the world, which does circle back a little bit in 2. Seeing the actual difference firsthand is more impactful than just playing 2.
You're not missing much really.... BL2 stands on its own very well. Easily has one of the best antagonists of any game, in any genre, let alone fps'.
BL3 makes great strides in gameplay over BL2... but the story and writing in 2 are still FAR better than 3.
Play them in order.
The first is a little “clunkier,” but the playable characters from one show up as NPC/story characters in two, and it is immeasurably more emotionally resonant - sometimes positively, sometimes negatively - when you have played as them previously.
One thing you should know about borderlands is that most people dont play it for the story.
The second game has an amazing vilain but the stories themselves are usualy your classic "defeat the bad guy" cliche. Its also a lot of juvenile humor wich sometimes work and sometimes don't.
The games dont take themselves very seriously and neither should you. Just watch a recap of the first game and play the second.
Skip BL1, play BL2, then pre sequel. Then if you really need more, consider either going back to BL1 or go to BL3. Just know that both of these options will not be as good as BL2
I've played BL2 for 100's of hours and enjoyed every second of it, despite me knowing literally nothing about BL1. It's definitely fine to jump straight into BL2.
I’d recommend Borderlands 2. If you want to be a nigh unkillable psycho bad ass, try Krieg. Do absurd melee damage and hulk out, which refills your health. In that mode it refills your health again every time you kill an enemy. If you activated near death the ability timer resets so you can use it again just as soon as it ends Once you get some abilities and artifacts for synergy and to upgrade the melee damage you’ll be one shotting a lot of tough enemies. Even if you’re fighting a boss monster that you have no hope of beating, if they spawn smaller minions throughout the fight you can space out killing them to keep yourself alive as long as possible. you can play solo be practically invincible in most situations.
You 100% don't need to play the first to enjoy the second, but I can summarize the first game's important plot beats in a few sentences.
The "vault" you thought had valuable treasure in, was actually a giant, unbelievably powerful ancient alien being. Some people want to harness the power for EEVVVILLL, or whatever, namely the gun manufacturers, and more specifically for the first game, Atlus.

I loved the shit out of BL2 and tried going back later to play BL1 but the missing quality of life stuff turned me off. For example you have to click to pick up EVERY bit of cash that drops whereas in BL2 you auto picked it up by walking over it
Skip one. It's fun but did get a bit boring.
2nd and above are all cool af. 2nd being the best
Borderlands 2 is a great place to start.
Need? no. It may help flesh out the stories of the characters some, though and really what you could do is watch the cutscenes for 1 on youtube and you should be ready and all set for 2.

I only ever played 2, wanted to play 3 but I got busy and couldn’t find the time and now I just don’t want to.
2 is great though, don’t need to play 1 to understand anything really.
BL1 is way better than either of those in my opinion, but I know most people here will vehemently disagree so do with that what you will. It’s just my opinion.
Regardless, to answer your question you don’t need to play the first one but I’d highly recommend it.
I enjoyed BL1 and BL2 to be fair, agree that the pre-sequel wasn’t great. BL3 was a blast!
1 was a fun game and I sunk a bunch of hours into it but you won't be required to play it to enjoy 2.
Now, if you play 1 first it will make you appreciate 2 even more for how much better the plot, gameplay and graphics are though.
Borderlands 2 is one of my favorite games .... the rest meh .... 1 has a meh story and good game play, 2 is just phenomenal... 3 just couldn't capture that same magic
