GTA and World of Warcraft defined online gaming pretty much. Another in the same magnitude would be CoD

Funny because GTA SA didn't have online without modding.

I'd also add the iPhone's launch. Smartphones rocketed off from that point really, and mobile gaming is the biggest segment of gaming.

Super Mario Galaxy is easy to top, even its sequel is way superior. And Odyssey blows past both of them.

2017 was crazy. It's very recent so you cant look back to it and go wow look at those classics. But the sheer quantity of quality games is unrivaled.

RE 7, Nioh, Horizen zero dawn, nier automata, destiny 2, prey, injustice 2, assassin creed origins, uncharted lost legacy, wolfenstein 2, sonic mania, evil within 2, cuphead, Zelda BotW, little nightmares, Hellblade, Samus returns, Mario Odyssey, what remains of Edith finch, for honor, divinity original sin 2, a hat in time, total war Warhammer 2, Xcom 2: War of the chosen DLC, crash bandicoot trilogy, sniper elite 4, Dishonored death of the outsider, xenoblade chronicles 2.

How do you even compete with this many quality games?

Personally, while this might sound crazy, I think 2020 is pretty high up there. Not just because of the big releases. I just think the year proved how massive the games industry truly is. The pandemic hurt most other industries, but video games just grew. The perfect year for a game like animal crossing to come out as a lot of people who barely or never play games on a console went out of their way to start doing so.

People began to notice how massive the community is and we saw hype for a game like never seen before with Cyberpunk 2077. Again, people who typically never play games jumped along the hype train and even pre-ordered a game for the first time. It's almost impossible to explain just how anticipated this game was both within and outside of the gaming community.

There were plenty of big releases that year in various genres. Some continuations that pushed its own genre like Doom Eternal, but also continuations in series that has been dorment for a while like Crash Bandicoot 4, Serious Sam and Half Life Alyx. New experimental games like Dreams (if you can even call it a game) or My Friend Pedro or Death Stranding. Hype games finally releasing like the aforementioned Cyberpunk, but also The Last of Us Part 2 and Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Other notable games/events: Warzone released and were the first Battle Royale to fully compete with Fortnite. Fall Guys had the biggest spike and fall in the player base. Among Us, while not releasing that year, surprisingly became an internet juggernaut over night (another game that everyone played regardless of whether or not you typically played video games). Ghost of Tsushima released and semented itself as a PlayStation classic. Nintendo released Super Mario 3D Allstars, a remake of the biggest 3D Mario games, but only for a limited time.

Other popular games like danganronpa 3, hellblade, night in the woods, prey, yakuza 0, destiny 2, the list goes on

There is a case to be made that some games are so incredibly influential, that they carried a year on their own. Think the year Tetris was released or the year Minecraft was released.

That being said, we have 2004, which had WoW and GTA San Andreas, both of which are up there for the most influential games of all time. Pair that with a few other gems like KOTOR II, and I think that year should take the cake.

I'm gonna say 1992 simply because of Mortal Kombat. Why? It was the year the Government began to fear video games. They realized kids were happy and not by traditional wholesome means like, church, school, and war. Instead, kids were playing a game that literally had legislation created and the ESRB. Also Mortal Kombat brought a realism to video games never done before and pretty much evolved the fighting genre. Any year that makes the government of the USA afraid to a point of holding legislation and writing bills, and creating things like the ESRB.. thats a year that moved not only players, but governments of 1st world countries. That was the year everyone knew, video games were here to stay.
