It almost seems too obvious to say aloud but Lara Croft would be the first I can think of.

Zero dawn aloy rocks, forbidden west aloy kind of sucks. She's a bit of a dick to her friends just cause they want to help her. I've played borh of the games already,100%. Bayonetta is another strong female lead character in video games.

Chloe Frazer is pretty good.

Selene, the main character in Returnal, is really well done. I mean it's such a psychological concept it has to be, but I ultimately really believed her story.

Mio, Sena, and Eunie from Xenoblade 3. That entire cast was fantastic, but the 3 main girls were great. They had their own arcs with their own depths.

I wouldn't call Samus well written. When retroactive put bounty hunting sidequests in Metroid prime, Nintendo was confused why Samus would be hunting people. Turns out when Nintendo(Japanese) originally said she was a bounty hunter (in english), they didn't actually know what it means, they just thought it sounded cool. According to nintendo the reason Samus does what she does is because of a "motherly love" for humanity. So basically, samus' motivations boil down to hormones.

The first well written female character that enters my mind is... Kreia from Knights of the Old Republic 2. I remember last playthrough I was totally mystified by her, found her interesting, but also very irked at the same time by the things she would say during our interactions.

Everytime I thought I knew it all, or that I was right, she would say something that would mess me up and make me think, and question. It created an interesting dynamic and I knew there was something more to her.

One day while playing, out of curiosity I looked her up (because I remembered even further back to when I beat the game on Xbox so knew I wouldn't be spoiled). I didn't realize she was so incredibly revered but I understood why, as I continued playing.

... now I really wanna play that game again, as a 31 year old who would understand it even better. It's been at least a decade.

There was a character in a game called Last Remnant named Emma Honeywell. She is an absolute chad. A serious protector, stoic, scarred, powerful, and... spoiler I don't feel like saying.

She has a daughter you'll notice wandering around the game as basically a mercenary, and it goes to show you how strong she is when she literally does not need to worry about her daughter being safe... AT ALL.

Lulu from FFX
Samus from Metroid
