What is *The* mmo(rpg)?

Many play mmos, it's something you csn feel accomplished as you progress and you are able to meet many different kinds of people. Weather it be through a Guild or an alliance, maybe a trade for that rare weapon, or maybe you meet a newbie and take them under your wing. In the world if just about any mmo the possibilities are endless even if the content itself is limited. What mmo do you/have you played that gave you a memorable experience or what's something you would recomend to others looking to start an adventure in a populated mmo?

this describe the old mmorpg experience. very rare this days seeing how everyone wanted to play solo for most content. less drama less everything.

tbh I missed not sleeping at night and just chatting away with my maplestory buddy in some random map.
good times.

Being younger myself (early 20s) I still stayed up late at my cousins grinding classes in WoW to lvl 20 cause I didn't have the membership, then it was games like DCUO, and ESO, and OSRS for a bit. I never got the appeal to games like Destiny (tho I dod love and play it for awhile) just felt so lonely even in a full party or world event. Only joy in that game was helping thr newbies. I think the best MMO I played was when I used to be on Ps4 and ESO, some awesome people there of all ages worh am old school vibe :)

pretty much all my buddies now are in their 30's. if not busy with family, they are busy with career. hardly any of them play on9 game anymore. and I just washed my hand from mmorpg last year too after a server shutdown. the grinding is just too tiring by this age. just gonna play single player game from now on....

unless they released blue protocol. prolly gonna go ham with the old guildies for one last time

FFXI will forever hold a place in my heart, though FFXIV is a far superior game and what I would recommend to anyone looking to get into an MMORPG.

I believe you can play up the the most recent expansion for free, so to level 70 at least, maybe 80 now. Not sure on that.

You are locked out of the markets and free companies ("guilds" in other games) until you're a paying subscriber. I think those features enhance the game enough to be worth the $12/mo but that might not be true for everyone.

I do have fond memories of Aura Kingdom, the players are very nice people from my experience and the game is pretty decent too.

Elder Scrolls Online. Lots of people, lots to do, great lore, decent quests, good endgame pve, insane but fun pvp.

WoW of course. I've been playing with the same group since 2009, and we're very proud of the community we've built. The game has its ups and downs, but it's nothing if not reliable.

Yes, that's something they need to update. You ought to at least be able to play up to the previous expansion's level cap for free.

I've been paying for the game with in-game gold for so long now that this kind of thing never occurs to me until someone brings it up, but it's probably the biggest reason I've never bothered trying another MMO. I ain't paying monthly. It's an outdated system.

You're correct. It sucks because basically every class doesn't start filling out their kit until the 30-40 range*, and with WoW's emphasis on the endgame, the game doesn't truly start until max level. Level 20 isn't even enough to get your dick wet. Maybe it was ten years ago or whenever they came up with the F2P model, but definitely not anymore.

*This might be a little different with the new talent system

Talent system was neat, I was always a mage in ANY game and went for a tank deathnight build amd man it was fun! For an hour and a half it took to get to lvl 20..

And it sucks because as popular as ot is let alone other incomes surely they coukd afford it let alone expansions... I'm just saying, imagine how much bigger the community could get. Also. How much would it be with in game gold?

It depends on what region you're in and how expensive WoW tokens are in that region at any given time (1 token = 1 month game time). I'm in the US region where they go for roughly 180k - 220k gold lately. Very expensive for a new player, but gold is easy to make on the auction house if you put in the time to learn.

If you're curious what determines the price of the tokens: people buy them with real money to sell them for gold on the AH. That way people with e.g. lots of money but little time IRL can fund their WoW adventures without having to farm or get involved with the auction house.

Retail has lost a lot of the magic that existed in previous iterations. If you can, start with classic editions as the games held a much stronger community system than the new versions do. The original, despite some of its faults, created some of the best immersion and community building of any mmo I’ve ever played.

You should take a look into private server. But be aware that most of them are pay to win trash server that only last for a few weeks but with time you will be able to know what a good one is.

DDO for me. Nothing else has matched it in terms of quest mechanics (actual traps and puzzles with instanced dungeons that require a diverse party as opposed to endless fetching), character build diversity and replayability. I've been on since it went free to play and am still on with my guild to this day.

I don't play MMO's personally, But I know a few people that really enjoy FF14. I think it's free to play up to lvl 30 with no time limit.

Welp for me its actually 3 mmos that had this profound effect on me: Lineage 2, Tera, and Black Desert Online. Lineage 2 had all these private servers and for a young broke kid that was all I could ever ask for. I remember trying all different types with custom drop rates/exp rates/ custom shops and gear sets exclusive to that private server. I really enjoyed playing this one server called L2Extreme.

Then came TERA. The Exiles Realm of Arborea. I enjoyed the combat of this game so damn much, its to this day one of my most fond memories. I played a lancer, which was like a dude with a lance and a shield, and that shit was busted af, I learned about block cancels and combos, I became one scary dude to fight, and felt so accomplished in that game. I felt like i was Bruce Lee or something, of course there were plenty of dudes better than me.

Then came black desert where it just took ideas from all these other games and perfected them. I got to learn to love life skills along with learning how to combo on my berserker. Of course I didn’t go nearly as far in this game but It sure as hell gave me a huge dopamine rush enhancing a tet ogre ring, which was, at the time, a very expensive necklace in the game and the enhancing system is brutal and unforgiving, essentially blowing both the enhanced ogre ring and the second ogre ring used to enhance it. Meaning you lose a metric shitload of currency if you fail. Luckily all went well and I nearly shit my pants at the result.

Course now I’m too busy between working, hanging with friends, and fitness/physique goals to play something this focus and time consuming. But ooh man those games gave me some of my fondest memories.

So the issue here is you are not looking for a game you are looking for the white picket fence experience that comes around at the start of something.

For me the game was WoW back in the day. I am still in touch with most of the people I played with and they are all awesome but few of us actually play games any more. And even when I go back to WoW now it just isn't the same. I never miss the game, I miss the people.

Anyway, point is any MMO can give you that if you get in with the right folk. WoW, FF XIV, EvE Online. They all have active communities the trick s finding those you fit in with. Don't be afraid to guild hop and move around, find the crew you fit in to and do what you can to do things together and get around the current need everyone seems to have to play solo in multiplayer games. I am probably just old and crotchety but I'm not sure it will ever be what it was, the landscape has just evolved.

Best bet would be to get in on the ground floor of whatever the next big MMO or multiplayer experience will be, that is where it will happen again.
