I’ve always liked FF games because their great stories and beautiful artwork. I’ve played 6,7,8, and 15, so far. I saw trial version of 14 on psn and decided to give it a try. I’ve been on the game for about an hour but haven’t played yet. Once I installed the game, created my account, verified my email, waited patiently through the intro, and queued for a server, I kinda lost steam. Something about the game already seems disjointed compared to the ones I’ve played. I go all-in with FF and just want to know if y’all think it’s worth it or if I’m wasting my time.

It is a good game and the story of you dont get sidetracked to much is good too.

But just be aware that it is an online game. The most fun you will have is with people together. I loved playing ffxi and I did play xiv too, but life catched up.

The first leg of the game, the A Realm Reborn story before you get to Heavensward is kind of a slog imo. It's leagues better than the original FFXIV but they were still figuring things out at the time of release. Some parts of the story kind of show their age with how slow the pace is. My biggest advice would be to try to get interested in the characters and the world/story. It is quite a long story and if you try to rush through it you will get burned out, at least I did the first time I tried playing. Just try to take your time and absorb the world, if that makes any sense.

Towards the later half of ARR the story kind of picks up a bit but if you can make it to that point you should have a blast in the Heavensward content and beyond, as it only gets better from there.

I would highly recommend you to play FF10.

Yes, first thing that stood out to me was the absence of 10 and 12 from this list as well.

FFXIV is an excellent game but it is not a final fantasy game per se. It's a completely different genre of game and is much more comparable to games like World Of Warcraft.

I personally enjoy it very much and some of the classic FF plot themes and devices do carry over to XIV but if you're looking for the classic JRPG experience... That's not it.

In that case, yes, FFX would be a better choice.

NGL, parts of the 1-50 slog, especially at 50, are frustratingly paced, but it is a good story. The plot pacing picks up a lot once you enter the main city of the Heavensward expansion and only gets better from there.

I wouldn't recommend buying a skip for your first playthrough though, there's alot of worldbuilding you don't want to have missed come Endwalker.

It will all depend on what you like about FF games. If you like the single-player RPG experience, you won't get that with FF14. However, it has everything else you know and love from FF games with the added benefit of being an online game that involves a large community.

Especially if you like other FF games it's a pretty fun game. The main story line in Final Fantasy XIV is one of the better Final Fantasy stories, and the atmosphere and characters are both fantastic.

As others mentioned the first part of the game, A Realm Reborn, is the weakest part of the game. If you can get to Heavensward the game picks up from there.

I've always been a Final Fantasy fan, ever since I was a kid.

I'd watch my dad play them & saw him get emotional at FFX. Decided to play it myself when I was young, then again when I got a little older and I still return to it every other year. FFX hit me differently and has since been my fav game of all time for the last 15 years.

I'd recommend that one for sure. But to answer your question (there was a reason for this).

I've played basically all of them. And I tried 14. I tried it for about 30 hours, just based on what people close to me had said about it, and what people online have said about it.

If it wasn't a Final Fantasy game - i.e. same game, just not FF themed - I wouldn't have given it 5 hours.

It's far too slow for me. I 100% do not buy into the "you have to play 50 hours till it gets good" MMO mentality, the game should be captivating from the start. I can understand the appeal, and it's an amazing put together game, but I think I needed someone else to play through it all with, who also hadn't played it before, and who also would go at my same pace.

Which is a tall order.

You're supposed to treat it, in a way, to a standard RPG - MMO elements are added in. But the story is so slow. So, so, so slow for the first 30 hours + basically no voice acting & a boat load of text. Not normally an issue but I just couldn't muster the willpower to put myself through it.

If you're massive into MMOs, love them & know you're going to play 200+ hours, go for it. It'll be well worth your time. If not, and you're on the fence, I personally fail to see how you'd get more enjoyment from it than from choosing another mainline FF game and experiencing that.

Just my take on it.

It’s fantastic is short bursts and scratches the MMO itch from time to time. But I really can’t ever stick with it for more than a few weeks at a time. The base game and most of HW is a slog. The post HW stuff is where it really starts to get good.

I like FFXIV, I just wish they'd release it on Xbox so I could be casual with it and play it on the big screen.

The free trial...is semi worth it. When I play FFXIV it's for the crafting/gathering systems, but the free trial limiting your inventory space and denying access to the marketboard kills that. You can go to the effort to make HQ versions and such but it'll only ever sell for 10 cents (basically) to the npcs. You wind up needing so many materials and stuff you get from other classes your inventory can't keep up...

In the other areas, it's an mmo. Combat is slow and based on the traditional button on a timer system. It looks nice, but personally looking nice on my computer monitor don't matter as much as looking nice on the big TV.

Having a subscription system in today's day and age is ass, especially since they also have cosmetics. They offer a free trial to play up until the end of the first dlc, but of you've ever paid for the game you can't play the free trial anymore. The system surrounding the game is so stupid and asinine that it half kills it for me, but if you just subscribe and play it shouldn't get in the way.

Literally just finished ARR on a free trial account last night. Yes it is slow to start, but it is a great game. The story towards the end of ARR really sucked me in, and I am having a great time. For the exactly $0 I have spent, it's been a fantastic experience.

With MMO's though you should note that there is A LOT to learn. I have really just been taking it slow, and I have a friend who plays that has been helping me understand everything better.

I also play WoW, and they are quite different. WoW has smoother combat, but relies heavily on FOMO to keep you engaged. FFXIV is slower and more relaxed, which is something I really like.

IMHO, I don't like 14. It falls into the same trap newer MMOs do of holding your hand and making things easier to obtain to make it more inclusive. Plus the combat basically alerts you where to move from to avoid attacks rather than learning mechanics.

If you're into the MMO scene, I'd rather recommend Final Fantasy XI. 20 years worth of content to go through and definitely more enjoyable to play mechanically. Just need to always have wiki open to find your way.
