God of war winning goty over rdr2 in 2018 is the biggest crime in gaming history in 2022 elden ring deserves it because it’s innovating it changed the open world formula while god of war Ragnarok is still your classic game

May I asked what Elden Ring innovated on open world formula?

Lack of handholding, worldbuilding

Isn't that something that has been done before, and even better, by BoTW?

No, not by a long shot.

Ok if there's anything Elden Ring did, haven't seen it. Maybe I didn't play it long enough.

It’s not lack of handholding for me it’s the immersion and that you always find interesting stuff while traversing in the world look at ac for example the map is boring and lifeless

It’s the first game to successfully follow the formula of BotW’s open world, but did it better. Everything you see in the distance that looks interesting is interesting. You can travel to it immediately if you’re skilled enough and the sense of wonder and discovery is arguably the greatest in any game ever created.

It’s innovation is a bit more subtle because it’s really innovating on top of BotW’s innovation. Like, for me, Elden Ring is more-so revolutionary than it is innovating. But regardless, it truly is a once in a generation type of game.

Your first paragraph literally describes Skyrim.

I haven’t played Skyrim so I guess I don’t know. But everyone seemed to talk about BotW’s open world being a new and innovative type of open world. And that’s the way Elden Ring’s open world is as well. So that makes me assume that most people don’t view Skyrim’s open world as the same as ER/BotW.

Again though, haven’t played Skyrim. I do plan on it soon tho with it being on PS+!

While I agree that elden ring is going to win and deserves it, I see this argument a lot and simply can not agree with it and I think it's wrong and it's just people ignoring that certain games exist. Elden ring did not innovate or changed anything, the formula used by elden ring has been done before especially by Zelda games, wind waker comes to mind and Breath of the Wild is pretty much the exact same formula, it's just that instead of a cartoonish and more childish style it has a Dark souls style to it with a darker tone and tougher boss battles, imo Darksouls itself is way more innovative than Elden ring.

Once again no hate towards Elden ring, it is my pick for goty and I think it's totally deserved.

Bro if you look at it this way every game is a reskin of each other it’s just copy and paste with your own sauce on top

Pretty much yeah, I mean it's inevitable with the amount of games that there are out here nowadays it is difficult to create something new and innovative, so most good games try to add a good "sauce" to it, which is what elden ring did.
