Right up there with games in Beta going up for Game of the Year awards. What even is that logic? Your game is either finished or not, screw the devs/publishers trying to straddle both sides of the line.

I'm pretty sure PUBG released on Xbox specifically so that they would be considered a released game for awards. The Xbox version was considered a full release while all the others were still beta releases.

I was thinking Halo Infinite but yup, it's certainly not the only one.

I mean, come on, most games release in beta just without saying that. They are buggy messes on launch these days; save for a few notable exceptions.

luke31071 t1_iydbxpg wrote

No arguments here.

Just saying you either say "it's a Beta" and forfeit any right to claim awards that should be reserved for "finished" products. Or you admit it's fully released but you've done a shit job and thus, don't deserve any awards. Right now the Beta excuse is used to simply shirk any responsibility for the crap state of releases, while simultaneously trying to claim the benefits associated with full releases, like charging full price....

[deleted] t1_iydoucs wrote

i'm convinced "beta" is just used when a game that should've been ready to launch ages ago needs to be released but it's still too broken to play thoroughly.... so they just call it a beta.

some games even remain in beta status for years

This is a pretty broad statement. Some Early Access games are trash, and some really ARE working hard at consistent updates. If a game falls into the latter category why SHOULDN'T it deserve the labor of love award?

MaineJackalope t1_iycljrg wrote

I can't think of an early access game more deserving of the labor of love than Star Citizen, but I don't think it should win because the award should reward companies that support a game post launch not those that may never launch

Tenalp t1_iycxkab wrote

If it's not yet released, it's not a game. It's an idea. An idea that people will be defending until 2082.

MaineJackalope t1_iycyj1r wrote

Nah, it's definitely a game and the one I play most, no one comes and argues that Valheim and other early access games aren't actually games before they release. They're games for sure, they're just not finished games, but I don't need developers arbitrarily deciding the game is done to have a ton of fun in it.

Tenalp t1_iycywtx wrote

I must be mistaken. Is Star Citizen not the space game that spent years and years in development selling ships while still not released in any capacity? Did it (or whatever I'm thinking of) finally come out? If so, I rescind my initial comment.

2

MaineJackalope t1_iyd0xzc wrote

It's been playable in some way shape or form for many years, I started playing it in April of 2020, it's currently on Patch 3.17.4, where 3.0 is when they added the first 1/8 scale planet. There's now 4 planets (two earth likes, a city planet, and gas giant) each with a fledged out City with a combined 12 moons that are all completely explorable and have some points of interests like caves, trading outposts, mineable resources, and shipwrecks, dozens of space stations and asteroid fields. Mission and reputation system. A prison for criminal players to spend some lock up time in when caught, and a bunch more.

Here's a marketing video they put out last year, it makes the world seem a bit more loved in than it currently is as it uses alot of older marketing vids, but it's all engine and the kind of stuff you can do. https://youtu.be/m-Rz5PTMuaw

Here's a more balanced video from one of the community's content creators that cuts the bullshit https://youtu.be/Or_w4wEi-I8

I easily put 8 plus hours a week into playing it though, either just enjoying it as an immersive space sim or with my group doing Piracy trying to rob other players. Still a ton to do, and the Developer is the most transparent I've ever seen, not only sharing a roadmap of future features but also a progress tracker that shows what individual teams in their now 700+ employee studio are actively working on and will be working on down the line

So, in other words, you are an unpaid playtester and the game has not been finished yet? And is long overdue based on fundraising campaigns? Got it!

IvoryMFD t1_iyf66j4 wrote

I dabble in star citizen and I'm with you on this. I enjoy it but it's such a cash grab. They pour resources into shiny new systems and charge high prices for ships to go with those systems but then never finish the systems. I'm not convinced that this isn't their intended business model. They make so much money doing it. Edit to add that they even sell ship concepts. You can spend about 2k for a ship that will maybe release in a year or two... but probably not

2

TheBenevolence t1_iyco0qp wrote

Because you should be expected tp finish your product.

Part of it is probably just the bad apples spoiling the bunch, except there's a lot of bad apples. Any time someone puts a game out in EA and it stays there forever. A game getting an award doesn't guarantee its completion to 1.0, and that's probably part of the worry here. You want X, while there's still a chance you could just dump it and run? Then throw it that there's games that have hit 1.0 and still update, and when you compare X and Y, some people think Y deserve it more.

Likely this is a Valheim post, and while I like Valheim (I've even been replaying it recently) the game doesn't qualify for this award, full stop. They have probably 50 pages of comments on thdir steam post about it saying thdy dont deserve it yet. A popular alternative people like is Deep Rock Galactic, which hit 1.0 a while back, and is full of spirit as well, and has been updating with seasons and etc. My only hangup with DRG is they still sell cosmetics, versus a game like Terraria which won last year and pretty much only ever sells the game more with their updates.

I don’t think any game is more deserving of that award than No Man’s Sky. That game went from absolute trash to possibly the best game of its genre and the developers haven’t asked for a dime.

Thebxrabbit t1_iybr87l wrote

No man’s sky didn’t launch in early access though. That was the whole controversy, when it came out on day one it was somewhat bland and lacked a lot of promised/advertised features.

1

TheBenevolence t1_iycnbbn wrote

Valheim has barely made any updates in its time of 'release', and beyond that hasn't even hit 1.0 yet.

At time of writing Valheim has done, what, Hearth and Home. Wolf caves, and made Mistlands a public beta? There might have been a food update in there. Or perhaps that was with wolf caves.

Terraria, the previous winner, has received some 53 or so updates. Now I'm sure not all of those are major updates, but if you know terraria, enough are.

Valheim is outstanding in its potential. It's potential. Not its updates history. If they got their shit together then one day it will be a downright amazing game. But until then they shouldn't beg for an award they haven't earned. They have 3 (4 if counting ocean)entire biomes they have barely touched, that were in original release.

Labor of love is for a game that could be dropped as Standalone, but they kept plugging away at it and updating it. (IMO, this also disqualifies live service) Much as I Aldo like Satisfactory, I would say the same thing about it. You're not done yet, don't go begging for awards.

6

biscuity87 t1_iydyxf2 wrote

Valheim basically requires mods at this point to keep the game challenging or interesting at all.

The wolf caves were like doing a single Skyrim instance.

They say mistlands is going to be “hard” but it will probably be a cakewalk. After playing with mods that make enemies have way more stars (like 5) I can’t see going back to the base game and calling anything in it hard. Things like 2 star trolls and draugr elites when you are butt ass naked will obviously hit hard but once you get armor they are nothing.

If people want to spend hundreds of hours sitting in their base dicking around it’s a sandbox game and they are welcome to it but the core game loop has barely been touched and the amount of updates has been very disappointing.

3

Tenalp t1_iycybuh wrote

See now, Project Zomboid fits this bill. Since the multiplayer update it could have been labeled "finished." But it is still labeled as early access, and still keeps getting new content, and fixes. You can argue that that is due in large part to the modding scene, but when the developers are adding popular mods to the game (upcoming basements comes to mind), I feel like that doesn't really count.

1

MrTeels t1_iycvrfs wrote

I have 230+ hrs in it and i'm not finished. Even with the base content.

−1

TheBenevolence t1_iyd4ee1 wrote

Okay.

None of that matters to the Labor of Love nomination.

Again, it's a good foundation. The game is good in its style and most of its mechanics. I enjoy it. I'm playing it again. But that doesn't mean it deserves this award. This is just a deceptive comment meant to imply the game has a lot of content. It doesn't have as much as you imply, unless you're a builder type, but at that point many games could be that. Conan, Terraria, Minecraft etc etc etc but many of those have had more updates than Valheim

Cazineer OP t1_iye811d wrote

You probably want to educate yourself before running your mouth and showcasing that you’re the true idiot in the group.

The award by definition is for celebrating a games continued support, years after a title is released from 1.0. It’s not about if a game is good or bad. The award is intended to commend games like No Mans Sky not a game like Valheim that has had one major update in a year and is still in early access.

That’s not the point. The definition of the award is for games that are post 1.0 and have received ongoing love/development, many years later. It’s not about if a game is quality or not.

TheHollowBard t1_iye7hpt wrote

I agree that awards should go to full releases, but I think there is a lot of Garbo that goes derelict after release, and so people's impulse to just nominate something they know devs have a heart for is understandable.

You do realiae studios release games in beta/early access to get around the delays caused by xbox/psn/steams etc testing phase so they can quickly make changes if there are game breaking bugs?

Fortnite BR was released in this way so that they didnt have to get "approval" from xbox/psn to make daily/weekly updates.
