I am doing some research for an assignment around micro transactions and their effect on online games. I was wondering what people in the gaming community think about them? Personally I don’t mind cosmetic upgrades, but I dislike purchases that offer in-game advantages. Since the main use of micro transactions is to increase revenue for a particular game, I don’t see them going away anytime soon so is there a better type of micro transaction that could be implemented? Any thoughts or opinions are greatly appreciated!

I don't normally mind them as long as they are for cosmetic stuff only, the game doesn't constantly force them in your face and you can still get stuff without paying just slower.

I don't mind them on mobile games, as long as you can still beat/win without buying anything, it just takes longer. For console games, I'd rather just pay more at the start.

I don't mind they exist, as long as it doesn't hurt the game itself. Like making the game worse so people are basically forced to buy extra things.

I would never buy anything myself, these micro transactions are usually extremely overpriced, like 5-10x what I think it would be worth.

For cosmetics I don't have a problem. Pay-to-win microtransactions are an issue. Things like upgrading your character, unlocking skills or weapons, etc.

Depends on the context.

Generally Good

If they're for things that don't impact multiplayer experience such as cosmetics with no stat boosts

Exp boosts for single player games

Generally Bad

Items that give players an edge in multiplayer (stat boosting cosmetics, weapons, etc)

Limited time items that force you to either grind battle passes or flat out purchase through premium methods

Just a few examples.

Even cosmetic for me is usually bad as the stuff you get in game are nowhere near as cool or unique as the store bought items examples are the monster hunter layered weapons and the armours in assassins creed odyssey. Also they aren’t micro transactions anymore they are macro transactions micro to me is 1-5 pounds whereas macro transactions which are everywhere are £10 and up.
