Bought the game on sale on GOG yesterday, heard so many good things about it, watched the Netflix series last year, but have never played the game itself.

Agree. That unicorn is wild!
Sounds like we can't be greedy like in soulslike games?
The combat is not hard, you just have to wait dodge and counter and pick your spots with certain monsters. With humans you just riposte. As others have said, it gets pretty easy once you get it.
There is a werewolf early in the game that will kill you if you don't wait for the opening and it is very hard to pass it by just attacking. After that, the combat mechanics is probably the weakest part of an excellent game.
Wow there is riposte x_x thanks! Maybe i should wait for it's remaster
I don’t think they will do a remaster soon after they do new console generation update in December

Just play it... It's not overly complicated
Don't try to romance both women.
There’s more than 2.
i did this on my first playthrough and found out the hard way

Play on either Blood & Broken Bones (2nd hardest difficulty) or Death March (Hardest) unless you prefer combat with no strategy involved anything below these two difficulties turns the game into a boring melee spam. You'll have to actually strategize for fights on the hardest settings you need to know your enemies strengths and weaknesses, apply oil to your blade, use potions, take advantage of bombs, and know what signs are best for the situation.
If you care about that, start on Death March right away. Trust me when I say, the game is oddly easy even on that difficulty - so at least DM will encourage you to use potions from time to time.
And if you turn on lvl scaling prepare yourself when you will be at lvl 20+ to the pack of wolves which will kill you in 2-3 bites
Had this issue in ng+ in 2016, it could be fixed at this moment
Agree to play on Death March but will say that is will likely be a bit difficult for the first ten levels or so but then it gets much easier. Also forces you to use all elements of the game (bombs, oils, decoctiions, etc). Good to put first 5 skill points (or whatever they call what you get when you level up) in the fast attack skill (red skill tree all the way on the left). Play the game and have fun, it’s in my top two games of all time. Also, gwent.
Main quest will scale up to your lvl, so you could do all side quests before main one
Really enjoyed the game. Take some time to get used to the fighting system. It's not just hack-and-slash.
ALWAYS buy the gwent cards
Came to say this. Soooo much time running to all the taverns trying to find the ones missed.
Do everything quest wise all treasure, hunts,2ndary, then main ones. Gwent is a shit ton of fun...don't skip dialog cause there's great story elements.
Just play the game.
The horse sucks, geralt controls like a limp fish, and combat which is all you do besides talking to boring twats is barely passable.
I hope you find the medicore story truly special cause if you don't there's not much to like about the Witcher 3 outside of atmosphere.
But the titties haha 10/10 reddit game.
Lower your expectations. One of the most if not the most overrated game ever. Witcher 2 is better.

Don't spam attack or you'll get frustrated. Block dodge and counter until you get the fight mechanics.
Don't ignore the side quests.
Watch out for the stuffed unicorn.
