Im guessing its some sort of marketing ploy to sell more of that certain console, but I feel that they would get more money from the 2/3 of gamers who play on the competitors console/pc who would buy the game

Console manufacturers pay for exclusivity - which can massively de risk game development.
It's very anti consumer though
