Hi guys, I would like to discover the monkey island series starting by the first opus, but I don't know which version I should install. Is the remake good? Since it released a decade ago does the special edition still work well on recent computers?

To sum up, how to play it in the best possible conditions? Without bugs and problems of any kind. I precise that I know how to tinker, no problem if the installation is complex, what I want is that there are no problems while I play.

Thanks for your help.

The newer versions can be played with original graphics settings if I'm not mistaken. Either way, find which is easiest for you as there is no real difference. And have fun!

Either way, they're all great. Personally, I would play the first one on SCUMM as I like to see how these games were when they were originally released.

It's just a matter of personal choice but enjoy them!

I would on suggest SCUMM VM if you're going to play it on an old system or tablet.

Otherwise as stated before the remastered ones to have settings for "Original graphics" or "Retro look".

Personally, I loved the new visuals in the special edition. I always play that version when I want to experience the games again.

I think the remaster was much better for Monkey Island 2 than for 1. So for MI 1 I'd go for the original look, but the remastered edition includes it too, you just need to press a button to change. I know some people have found out a way to play a "talkie" version of MI1 with the old graphics, you can check that out. I think it doesn't require much tinkering.

MI2 has a much more polished remastered. But the original pixel art is beautiful too, since you don't know it, get the remastered version and change between one and the other (again, the old one is included; MI2 does have voiceover in the old version).
