I’m deciding between getting a PS4 or PC. Are games like ea sports NHL, any call of duty, GTAV pay to play online? I keep seeing that some games like final fantasy are pay to play but is that it?

On PC online gameplay is typically free, so for COD, GTA, NHL you can play online free.

Final fantasy online is a subscription game.

Snark aside, no. There aren't any modern alternatives. There's a community that has sprung up around NHL 2004, which is the last EA PC game, but I don't much beyond that.

EA makes you pay them directly for their games on PC, $5/month I think it is

Most others are free
