In some ways it was for open worlds. It's the combination of almost no barriers traversal and topography/points of interest.
Plenty of devs cite it as an influence these days. Head devs of Assasind Creed, Ghost of Tsushima etc.
It was designed by having testers run through thr open world and watch their pathing in real time, thousands of times, to place points lf interest in a manner that there are always multiple ones in sight, even with all the verticality going on.
The open world itself is one of the best ever created.

I'd argue it's one of the worst.
There's absolutely nothing of interest in it, it has excellent transversal mechanics which allow you to get around the world in a fun way.
But it's so barren and lacking in things to explore I don't know why you'd want to.
"Oh look it's one of the same 5 types of enemies copy and pasted over there"
"Omg it's the exact same ruins I saw 20 minutes ago"!
"Are you kidding me? Another shrine wow! I wonder if it has the same reward as the last 93 shrines I found?'
I can't wait to explore to try and find my 718th Korok seed.
It's the kind of Open world Ubisoft would get absolutely torn to shreds over.

Assassin's Creed, DA:I, Far Cry, Horizon, Tomb Raider, Wildlands, etc... sooo many games use this formula. I'm not going to argue that it's necessarily a bad formula. Because I think there's merit in the mindless fun of going from spot to spot and clearing it out. But personally, I do think it's the antithesis of what a great open world game is. When everything is marked on the map, or too samey, when there's nothing to look forward too: no interesting quests, or characters, or random encounters, or useful loot, etc... then there's no genuine sense of adventure. It's a check-list.

cough cough the Witcher 3 was released in 2014 cough cough

The Witcher has barely any focus on explorarion, without the witcher sense you would find jack shit.
This is a very frustrating topic because people have zero idea what they are talking about.

Haha you’re absolutely incorrect. The reason I mentioned TW3 was because it truly did set the bar for open world games. Best side quests in the industry, great living environments and characters, and a perfect amount of high quality stuff to do in the open world. Every landmark has some sort of loot or cool story. Every thing you see, you can go to. And there’s no filler BS. Some mini quests you stumble across even affect the world and the main story. And there’s very very little repetition or re-used content.
You’re free to dislike the game itself. But to deny that is fundamentally changed open world games is just objectively incorrect. Every single open world game that has come after has a small amount of TW3’s DNA in it. From 2015 all the way to present day.

W3 set the standard for quests and storytelling, yes.
Not exploration, certainly not traversal or combat for that matter. It's not an exploation based open world.
I don't dislike W3 in the slightest, your whole defensive rant is based on weird assumptions.
It changed open world games, and so did botw, in very different ways.

Didn’t think I was defensive or ranting at all. I thought we were having a friendly discussion. As indicated by me not downvoting you, but you downvoting me haha.
All good though I can tell this won’t be a constructive dialogue, happy holidays!

You assuming I don't like the game just because I said it didn't set the standard in terms of exploration is very defensive, yes.
I didn't downvote you. I got downvoted too and didn't automatically assume it mustve been you. Again, seems defensive, sorry.
Yeah sadly seems like it won't, thanks for staying polite at least. Likewise happy holidays.

I totally agree with top comment about it not being the pioneer but I didn't see anything wrong with yours
