This is the one. Monster Hunter World was my first MH and I hated it at first because of the awful new-player experience it presents. It took me a couple tries at it, but now it's one of my all-time favorites.

I played the demo for Rise first and could not for the life of me figure it out, even on the simpler weapons. Got the Stories spinoff, fell in love with it, and went back to the demo to give it another shot and finally managed to get it to click.

Yep, mine too. I expected dark souls like fighting mechanics with quick movements and dodgerolls with animation canceling. Hated how you're stuck in your animations and can't even turn your character properly in a combo.
Tried it sometime again and watched some guides on youtube. Once i got the system, i went full "moving fortress" with the lance. Halfway through i thought "i like the playstyle, but i'd like to have more aggressive attacks for big openings (like knockdowns). Then i came to discover the arts of shoving a giant handcannon in a dragons nostril and pulling the trigger.
