Having tried it after 2 and Presequel, i just cant get into it. All the guns (weapon type aside) feel the same no matter what manufacturer. From what i remember, the difficulty scaling was kinda crap. Whats the point of having tons of different weapons, when they do paltry damage and all look and feel almost identical?

I think Borderlands is a product of its time, doesn't quite hit the same these days.

Borderlands is not overrated. It is appropriately rated for the time it came out.

Also if you think the guns feel the same or not, they do have differences per manufacturer that do make a difference in the end game. But for the most part you're farming specifically for legendaries in that game anyway that do behave wildly different than any other gun.

Also you're comparing the original game to the sequels that came out several years later. Obviously the newer ones are better because they made improvements.

...I mean, you could say that about almost every game.

Call of Duty: World at War was revolutionary for its time. The best multiplayer on the market. Introduction to Nazi Zombies. Fantastic campaign-- it's even cooperative! But, if you were introduced to one of the modern titles first, then went back and played World at War, it'd be fine. Not great, not bad, just fine.

Same thing with Red Dead Redemption. Fantastic game. Considered one of the best of that console generation. But if you started with Red Dead Redemption 2, which essentially improved on its predecessor in every single way, Red Dead 1's only offer would be its additional story.

After playing Borderlands 3, you'll realize how barebones and lifeless the actual gunplay was in Borderlands 2 and the Pre-Sequel.

And if you play Wonderlands, you'll realize how limiting the character customization and leveling is in the previous titles.

You kind of have to play the games when they come out to understand their hype/praise.

I actually joined the CoD series in Bo1, and only played WaW way after BO3 released and i had MANY hours into it.

WaW is probably one of my favorite CoDs, i really enjoyed the story. Not normally a fan of CoD stories, i tend to find them all samey. Tbh, i mostly got it for custom zombies.

Ive never reached the point of farming legendaries, tbh, I've only ever played a little past the first boss, the game just doesnt hold me that well.

So, from what i have played, the guns feel samey and underpowered.

I am not saying its a bad game, im just saying i cant get into it because of how the early game is.

Bro borderlands was amazing for its time, of course it won’t hit the same in 2023, because they had multiple sequels that was better.

The general consensus among Borderlands fans is that BL2 is the best one, so I don't see how it's overrated.

Which, I also disagree with that consensus. Or at least don't entirely agree.

Weapons were more mundane, but that also made loot feel more impactful. Even just boss weapons in BL1 felt like a major upgrade. The exact opposite of this is Tiny Tina's Wonderlands where everything is roughly leveled the same and every gun is quirky so nothing stands out and I just don't care about looting at all.

The atmosphere is a lot more grounded and gritty in BL1, striking a better balance. Unlike BL2 which just put the entire franchise in a trajectory towards memeshit that is just dated today.

That’s fair I think. I actually really liked the grittier atmosphere of it. I’m hoping for Borderlands 4 they find a middle ground between 1-3 because 3 was just too much.

I agree with you. I tried it when it released and didn't enjoy it. I then went on to purchase/trade it in 5 or 6 times to give it a solid shot, but it just never did it for me.

It's for that reason I never continued with the franchise.

No it isn't lol. Plenty of people frequently shit on borderlands 1 and say exactly what you're saying.

I personally like it the best out of all 3 of them, it has my favorite gunplay and the skil trees don't have a wall of text for each node. It's simple and straightforward to play.

Borderlands 3 was great for the first month but I found myself getting bored with having to use a small handful of meta builds for each character, and most of which require exploiting broken item synergies that allow you to 1 shot God with a splash weapon. I also didn't like or feel much of a connection to any of the 4 characters you get to choose from.

All of these games are literally just shoot hordes of enemies to grind so you can grind better later. More complicated doesn't necessarily mean better, objectively speaking

it was great when it first came out. But yeah if you’ve played the follow ups first it will probably seem a bit dull

I loved the first couple hours of Borderlands and have started that game from the beginning a million times. I've never made it to the end though because the people I play with never wait for me to be able to play and they get so far ahead of me that it's not fun anymore. I got the Pre-Sequel for free with my graphics card and I hated it. I tried to like it but everything about it was terrible imo. I never made it past the opening sequence. I tried Borderlands 2 with a buddy but lost interest quickly. I felt it lacked something that I loved in Borderlands 1, but I didn't and still don't know what that was. Perhaps it's simply that nostalgia was doing it's work on the first game and not the second. I don't know. That's as far as I've gotten.

Even though I loved what I played of it, I do think it was overhyped, or maybe incorrectly hyped. The thing that was forefront in the lead up to the game was the idea that there was some kind of AI system that allowed them to have near limitless weapons. But that was a bit of crafty language because there were only a handful of weapons really. It's just each weapon have hundreds of variants with different stats. And that was really disappointing to me. I had been expecting the game to create crazy weapons that would keep the game feeling fresh the whole time, but that wasn't what I got. So, in that sense I think it was overhyped. But it was still a very good and ambitious game when it came out.
