Definitely did. Couldn't help it at times as I got used to the halo maps. Just the colour coming from their screen in my peripherals gave me an indication of their location on the map.

It's accessible to everyone with the same amount of effort therefore looking at the other players screen is part of the meta.

my older bro gave me stuff so I'd keep playing halo 1 while he repeatedly sniped my face on Prisoner. he just wanted target practice. i cried, a lot. that mofackle was screen peaking before i even knew what it was. lol

Yes, and very openly. We either tried to rig something up to hide parts of the screen from eachother or made being able to look at the other person's screen part of the game.

I did. It's how you played games back then. It was a legitimate part of the game, with levels being designed around being able to identify where people are.

It's virtually impossible to not see the other screen when you're gaming. That said, there are people who relied on it and people who tried not to. I never knew anybody that lied about it.
