Now I am probably wrong but like... Portal though. Don't get me wrong, the second one is fantastic but I don't personally see it on a list of being "better" than the original.

For me, the story and lore unveiled in the sequel makes it a bit better.

They could have used the goop better, but thats a risk when introducing several new mechanics and the goop is the last one

For first playthrough, i like portal 2 better. It also has coop.

For speedrunning and the inventiveness, Portal 1 is just better. Its been broken to such a degree that i myself finished it in under 20 minutes. Portal 2's storytelling and triggers, as well as some reworked exploits just don't allow for that.

Of course this list is totally subjective. Keep in mind I wanted to enumerate just sequels that came direct after the original first game.

Traditional_Story834 t1_j6o7640 wrote

Yeah the game was more intense with the player hostile system, never knew who your friends were, lots of paranoid scenarios that played out whenever someone new joined lol. Pk vs PKK started in diablo 1 lol. The old ear trade will always be missed by me. D2 was the death of all of that. Nice to see some games emulate it in a way, it honestly felt similar as random encounters with other players in games like tarkov.

RyuTeruyama t1_j6o6m87 wrote

I can see that. Diablo 1 is a way more focused experience :)

Eh, Ace Attorney 2 was the weakest of the original trilogy, I’d agree with 3 though, that was a good game.

Compared to movies, most sequels in gaming are better than the original. They just have better game mechanics, and technology grants you better graphics and more advanced things to do etc.

When sequels fail is when either story elements ruin it, or developers change the game so drastically it can't be recognized as the same series or is dumb down in some ways. Oh and severe monetization and stuff like that.

Starfox 64 isn't quite a sequel since it more or less retells the same plot. Plus there actually is a Starfox 2.

I do agree though that 64 is much better than the original, and 2.

Not a direct sequel but Super Mario 3 and then later Mario World that expanded on a lot of the ideas.

Each sequel improved on the predecessor (though the "actual" 2 aka Lost World's wasn't that big a step)

Cmdrdredd t1_j6p5nx2 wrote

Yeah I just don’t know if I would classify it as a direct sequel to the previous game because the world changed every time and it wasn’t really a story continuation.

I feel like for games it's the opposite of movies because in games, the gameplay mechanics are a huge part so the story can suffer a bit as long as there are massive gameplay improvements and the subsequent games will be better. Call of duty games are the only ones that dont fall into this cause they just remake the exact same thing over and over.

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. I recently finished it and it totally blew me away. Storywise it is one of the best games I could ever imagine being created. Such a clever story full of mindblowing twists. Several that made me exclaim ”no way!” in fascination. I can’t believe how god damn good that game was. Even getting nostalgic already over some of its moments.

Being better than the first Danganronpa (Trigger Happy Havoc) was a high ladder to climb, but it managed to do that. I absolutely love the first one as well for similar reasons, but the sequal is just better. Both are on my top 10 favorite games list. I can’t recommend the series enough. Those games are among the best that exist.

I’ve moved on to the spinoff game now (Ultra Despair Girls) which so far I really like. It’s different, but I’m a big fan of the protagonist so far. I’m just so happy that I gave the Danganronpa games the chance that they utterly deserve!
