Origins was fun. Egypt is cool

Odyssey was my favourite. Sail the Greek seas.

Valhalla was meh.

Black flag, syndicate, origins or odyssey. Hell I’d even give ac 3 remastered a go.

If you're looking for a good jumping in point, Origins definitely works. Black Flag is good too since the present day story had gone off the rails by then so you don't really have to pay attention to it.

Play the originals. Don't kid yourself.

1 isn't necessary, but I agree with going back to the Ezio trilogy. Particularly if they want story.

Yer like to be a pirate? Black flag

You're a tough malaka who doesn't mind grindiness? Odyssey

You don't mind sand despite it being coarse and getting everywhere? Origin

You're some bloke that watched peaky blinders? Syndicate

If you want the older style AC then go for Syndicate, if you want the new rpg style then go for Origins.

I'd recommend all but Liberation. That one was honestly just so... blah.

Black Flag, Unity and Odyssey. Don't bother with Valhalla if story is what you're looking for.

Black Flag is the standard. Its mostly standalone in terms of story, by which i mean that even though there's a lot of references to past games, the information can be soaked up rather easily and filtered. In terms of gameplay, it is one of the most versatile in the franchise (from the ones i played).

Assassins creed 2 is a good one for story, but for the best experience imo, you'd need to continue on to Brotherhood and Revelations. Assassin Creed 1 is ok, but not entirely needed and Assassins Creed 3 is sort of an ending to the story, but it's not as good.

For any others, I either played only a bit or didn't play at all, so I can't say much except that they aren't fully tied to the original games in terms of story.
