I will say SWTOR is okay but I got stuck early in the game and gave up becuase of the leveling mechanism. With FFXIV, I sped run that thing and finished the main story quest in 3 weeks' time all the way to Endwalker before the recent update.

I'm gonna have to defer to FFXIV based on leveling game mechanics.

Yeah, this. You can 100% play this game as if it was a series of single-player RPGs if you don't want to engage with the online community.

There will be times and places where other players are obviously around, but you don't need multiple people to play together. You can level up all on your own, and these days you can keep up with the story just playing the story missions and not bothering with any of the side quest stuff.

Wouldn't a WoW-killer that didn't kill WoW mean it isn't a WoW-killer? I'm not sure if you're saying it as a good thing or a bad thing. Is it so good that it should have killed World of Warcraft but didn't or are you saying it was just another so-called WoW-killer that failed to live up to expectations and was over hyped?

1

Sycokinetic t1_j6luvvq wrote

It was a so-called WoW-killer that was specifically meant to be more successful than WoW. I think they ended up breaking the then-record for the highest-budget game? Or at least they came close. Obviously it was not more successful than WoW and eventually went F2P as a way to boost microtransactions, since subscriptions weren't cutting it.

I was saying it as a bad thing because they spent so much money and had such high aspirations, but ultimately they failed because they were trying to compete with WoW by making WoW.

It's pretty fun even if you play casually. Many of the class stories are superb. However, since it's a f2p mmo, a lot of features that are necessary for "getting ahead" are purchased from the store. like different cosmetic options and some convenience unlocks are only obtainable through the store

3

Saandrig t1_j6mikk6 wrote

What features of "getting ahead"? The store offers 99% cosmetics.

Some QoL things can be bought for free players, like extra quickbars or endgame gear authorizations (not the gear itself). But they are only needed if a player wants to dive seriously in the raider/PvP multiplayer part (and are all available automatically for subscribers). So at that point a player should just subscribe.

3

morphum t1_j6mju6b wrote

Hmm i guess it wasnt as many as i thought. Mainly just the artifact equipment authorization, crew skill slot, and other convenience unlocks, which admittedly you could easily go without.

I do agree with subscribing though. If OP finds himself really enjoying the game, the one-time 60 day subscription is well worth the investment

1

Saandrig t1_j6mkpop wrote

Plus a one time subscription gives access to all currently released expansions and the player keeps that access even after the subscription expires and isn't renewed. That's a good amount of extra story if a player wants more after finishing all the F2P content.

2

BuhamutZeo t1_j6n8u4m wrote

> QoL things can be bought for free players, like extra quickbars

Quickbars so you can use abilities is NOT QoL, it is P2W.

1

Saandrig t1_j6n9mbg wrote

You have enough quickbars as a free player for all the skills you would use. Especially since you are capped at 60 and won't have all abilities anyway.

Those in the shop are extra ones on top of the free. As a subscriber I didn't even use half of the available quickbars you get.

2

UpsetLobster t1_j6lrjym wrote

Definitely give it a try. En game systems tend to be on the boring side of things, but the leveling is amazing. Focus on class stories and you get a few gripping narratives to get through the next few hundred hours.

Sith warrior, sith inquisitor, smuggler, jedi Knight are really really good, but keep imperial agent for last.

It seriously is one of the best stories ever, if you dot it first nothing will come close in terms of quality in a good while.

Evil space James Bond is simply amazing. You can play the story so many different ways too.

2

mcbvr t1_j6lw5vt wrote

The history of this game is a bit tragic.

First and foremost it's pretty damn good. I personally found all the main stories engaging for each class. So much so that I played each one. Certainly some of the best storylines I've experienced in MMOs to date.

Side quests/stories are kind of blah, but I've not really played an MMO in which that wasn't the case.

The PVP was the most surprisingly impressive part of the game I enjoyed. Huttball is pretty unique to PVP in an MMO, and subverts your expectation of that experience in a great way. After enjoying the main stories, PVP gave the game staying power that I didn't expect it would have.

The best thing about it is that it really nails the Star Wars aesthetic, feel, and universe. When you charge into battle as a Sith Marauder you feel like the class you're playing in a visceral way. The same is true for most classes. I played a Sith Assassin mostly, and the experience is gloriously devious, sneaky, and lethal.

I believe the downsides to this game primarily came from EA being at the helm. The game has been plagued by problems of various severity for long periods of time. For example, it is created on the Hero Engine which can cause performance issues that will simply never be addressed because it would require an overhaul of the entire engine. They don't have intentions of funding what would be this massive undertaking.

EA is content to sell cosmetics through microtransactions and not ensure expansions are up to the quality they need to be for the asking price. I'm fairly certain their policy is to maintain an adequate player base that still makes the game reasonably profitable through microtransactions without devoting much attention to significant development of the game. They have no ambition to grow the player base significantly or improve the game similarly.

I get it. MMOs take a ton of investment to be successful and profitable, and that's tough to do with strong competition out there. However, as a player I didn't force them to compete in the arena of MMOs. They made that decision knowing the risk I'd assume.

It's a good game, but it's been pretty much relegated to the "maintenance mode" of development. EA isn't willing to invest much further in this game.

The good news is the base game is free at this point, and EA relaxed a lot of the restrictions that were initially placed on F2P players. It's a good time to experience what it did well without sinking money into it unless you want to.

Here's me and a friend with our two stealth classes that we had some great times with.

Saandrig t1_j6mjo3e wrote

The engine issues can be improved a lot with a x64 client. Currently it's being tested for SWTOR on the game's PTS.

Winterplatypus t1_j6lx55l wrote

The way it works is that your character has their own personal goals at each location, but each location also has a bunch of faction goals. So whenever you go to a new place you have 2 main objectives, conquer the location for your faction and pursue leads on your personal goals.

Keep both of those things in mind when you play, it can be very easy to get distracted and try to complete all the quests at every location. Don't be afraid to skip a bunch of side quests and just push ahead to the main objectives asap. Those main objectives are what make the game interesting. Doing all the side quests will burn you out on the game.

2

loyaltomyself t1_j6m79dm wrote

Even though it's an MMO, it's very solo friendly. As you progress through the story, just focus on a DPS spec, tank and heal specs are for group content (which you probably won't be doing for a long time) but will slow down how quickly you get through the story. Speaking of, each class as a unique story you play through. I would suggest going through all the stories, you get fun little account unlocks and there's small little ways each of the stories connect to each other. Finally, and this may be something you might not like to hear, I would STRONGLY suggest subscribing for a month or two. The f2p restrictions can be aggressive, and being a subscriber completely removes them, but then reverting to "preferred" (an account that has previously spent money) has less restrictions attached compared to a fully f2p account. During those months you are subscribed you can buy permanent account unlocks that will make the preferred status a lot more bearable.

Freakin random group of Jedi players came in, killed everyone, and left the loot for me. Whenever I played I keep an eye for the noobs to pay it forward.

2

Dr4zhar t1_j6me0da wrote

This game is basically a point and click if you don't take bosses into account. If you have a healer with you, average mobs will never even put you in jeopardy.

However, awesome dialogue, very nice atmosphere, huge maps (maybe even too big), quite diverse, enough planets, nice iconic characters, slightly comedic at times.

Oh, of course since it's EA what you'll get for free is basically a glorified demo. You'll need to pay for the full thing.

2

Saandrig t1_j6mk4bl wrote

If you are into it just for the class stories, you don't need to pay a dime. All classes and the first two expansions are included for free players.

2

Dr4zhar t1_j6mzjr8 wrote

Really? I think they made two expansions free pretty recently then, I remember playing not so many years ago and everything was still capped at lvl 60. I remember I got there with my sith juggernaut way before even hinting at the fact that >!you eventually kill your master. !<

Anyhow, class stories are very nice and the dialogues go from grim dark to utter comedy. I remember this game as another huge wasted occasion for a masterpiece.

1

Saandrig t1_j6n0e1t wrote

I think they gave F2P access to the first two expansions (Rise of the Hutts, Shadow of Revan) around 3 years ago. And that raised the free players cap to 60. Used to be 50, which was the cap at game launch.

1

Saandrig t1_j6mj9t0 wrote

There is literally zero grinding required while you play the story. There are more than enough class and planetary arc quests to keep you constantly overleveled. And that's before the multitude of other quests on your path, group content, PvP, etc.

And the game is so easy that you can beat it without ever changing your starting gear. Only time you need to learn to play is if you go into endgame content.
