Just loving the warm orange theme of this.

It is how many winter nights are etched in my memory. Out on drives with my father.

Yeah. Here those warm orange streetlights have been replaced with super white LED. :(

We still have some sodium-vapor lamps at the front of our house and I absolutely love them. The new pure white ones are terrible.

super9mega t1_j0u1nfq wrote

The issue with the sodium vapor is that it is not as effective as the LEDs for safety. But typically they avoid putting them in neighborhoods because the LEDs will keep you awake but sodium vapor has little effects on sleep

Batabusa t1_j0u30bd wrote

Sad, I wish that was the case here (that they'd avoid putting them in neighborhoods) but no.
Here (Norway) we have bright white everywhere.

Led can mimic this light exactly, its just cities choose the plain white instead of a warm color led

The first level of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World was similar to this. Fun game with a lot of nostalgic throwbacks. Can be a little over the top at times, but overall a fun one. Music was also done by Anamanaguchi, and is fantastic - It's a great introduction to chiptune music.

How so you do the big circle gradient around the lights? You paint each pixel individually?

4

DorothyHollingsworth t1_j0u87qx wrote

That's generally how pixel art is made.

blender4life t1_j0ugoe5 wrote

I just don't know if they have a program specifically for it that'll have a circle brush that you can apply the gradient to. Like in photoshop

I have recognized your work after seeing another one a couple days ago. Not only environment is so beautiful and atmospheric, but the girl visible on your works appears so real thanks to animations that are perfectly minimalistic and expressive. I can imagine classic adventure game featuring your style, it would be lovely to play.

Well, guess I'll be the other guy.

You're objectively wrong here. While I don't doubt your personal experience, street lights like this do exist and are even pretty commonplace. Sodium lamps are still in use the world over, particularly rural areas because of the relative costs involved (They're either cheaper to produce or cheaper to run, don't remember. Maybe both). It's the sodium that gives them that soft orange light, and a quick google search will give you plenty of like examples to the above.

At any rate, the artistic decision making on display here would be legitimate whether the lamps had real world analogues or not. The juxtaposition of natural snowfall and artificially monochromatic warm light creates a unique and evocative scene.

KamovInOnUp t1_j0u0s7q wrote

Sodium lamps are typically yellow

FilthyPrawns t1_j0u2ja0 wrote

They produce similar environmental lighting to what’s shown above. Cad yellows and dim oranges.

2

Nuklearmouse t1_j0sveby wrote

I lived in a place in eastern Pennsylvania that had high pressure sodium lamps in exactly that color

NoRodent t1_j0u23ll wrote

I don't know where you live but up until a few years ago, every single lamp in my city had exactly this color, because they were sodium-vapor lamps. They've been replacing them with LED lights but still plenty of sodium lamps remain. If you do an image search, you'll find plenty of photos that look almost identical to the pixelart. One example: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:High_Pressure_Sodium_Lamps.JPG
