At my college campus, there were fat and happy squirrels everywhere. There was one white one who was so sociable and waltzed right up to anyone with food, and when he died, the students had a memorial for him that stayed up for the semester. RIP.

Edit: UH yall. But I’m delighted to hear that there were other campus squirrels capturing the hearts and minds of students across the nation.

They're white but not albino. Still have pigment in their eyes. Idk why this bothers me so much but I have to let everyone know.

The Denton ones specifically.

UT also used to have that, but go coogs!

Legend has it it would bestow its magic upon any viewer and they’d do well on their test.

At my school we had the dumpster squirrels, and you did not fuck with the dumpster squirrels. They would ambush you and chase you for hundreds of feet

Was this in Illinois? There's a town there which had a huge population of albino squirrels, but recently the numbers have been shrinking from interbreeding.

daveescaped t1_j2cfprp wrote

Are you certain they are albino? I know they are described that way but I think they are leucistic (meaning an absence of all pigments, not just melanin).

2

Barflyerdammit t1_j2cx9k0 wrote

Not at all certain. I just found them through Atlas Obscura. Not exactly a scientific journal.

Fellhuhn t1_j2cxdfw wrote

Where shall they live if their family tree has no branches?

That’s an albino squirrel— they have a genetic mutation that causes a lack of pigmentation in their fur.

Bloomington MN has a large population of both white and black squirrels. And I'm just saying white and black because that's what color they are, I'm sure there's more scientific names for them. There's tons of the common grey/brown ones too but it's awesome seeing the other 2 in the snow.

fainting-goat t1_j2cgfqa wrote

We've got two of those living in the park across the block and my brother's family has one taxidermied on the shelf. I can contest that the immobile ones are fucking terrifying. 3/10

We have one near a local coffee shop near us, and always have to look for him when we go. Also a black one near our house, and the rest are grey.

Odd, since back in PA I never remember seeing anything other than brown.
