They're a necessary evil, I suppose. The earbuds are so small, how else are you going to control them without touch controls? I can't imagine trying to work with physical buttons on something this tiny.

As long as they're sensitive enough to register a deliberate tap on the body, but not so sensitive that just adjusting/shifting the earbud in your ear triggers them, then they're ok for me.

I have the Fiio FW5 with physical buttons and it's substantially more annoying than the Samsung or Sony buds I have with touch controls, they are simultaneously harder to deliberately press and easier to accidently press while pushing in. Physical buttons require more force, too, which tends to dislodge the buds. It's bad enough I don't use them on the Fiio while I use them on the Samsung and Sony all the time, and they pretty much "just work".

One thing I have found is the big brands (Samsung, Sony) do seem much better with the touch controls than Chi-Fi earbud makers. Once you know where the touch surface is and how to hold them (usually by the sides), I literally never trigger my Samsung or Sony buds putting them in or adjusting them.

My setup is usually: one click = pause, two clicks = next track

So whenever I accidentally touch my earbuds, it just pauses music

Touch controls aren't my favorite.

For in-ear stuff, real estate is kind of at a premium though, and mechanical switches are much larger than capacitive ones.

On my AirPods, I love them. Especially since the Pro 2s added volume support

Occasionally, I accidentally pause, but they're the best way to have controls.

The other options would be using your phone, which means pulling out your phone every time you want to pause (and some earbuds support turning off touch controls) or a remote, which I feel like most people would lose.

You need to adjust, just like with the almost buttonless cell phones.

This issue goes away once voice control software understands you

Yeah I wish on my buds 2 pro that there was an option to pause the music when you remove a bud, a la Apple Airpods, rather than have touch controls. Since they don't, I end up using the touch controls all the time to pause my music whenever someone wants to talk to me.

Huh, I actually like them, but the tws I own are the beoplay E8, which has a painfully obvious area where the touch controls are located. It's a giant flat space.

Typically, I disable them. If I ever need touch controls, it's easier to use the controls on the watch to play, pause, etc (Buds Pro 2, Galaxy Watch).

They can be excellent or atrocious. Just depends. I love the Pixel Buds and Sony XM3 controls. The Galaxy Buds2 Pro are good but the touch surface isn't super clear. I imagine ones that aren't consistent and touch the edge of my ear would be horrible but I've not used a set like that yet
