I hate closed back headphones for gaming. I need help.

I have come to realize closed back just sound terrible to me for games like fortnite. My favorite headphones I have ever used are the Philips SHP9500 HiFi Precision Stereo Over-Ear Headphones. My problem is, I am traveling for work and playing on a laptop in hotels and the open back let to much sound in to be enjoyable. Does anyone know of a compromise for my situation? Are semi-open the answer or do they still let a ton of sound in? Is this simply an eq issue I haven't figured out yet? Thanks in advance.

Semi-open may as well be open back. They don't isolate much.

I find the sound quality from a beyerdynamics dt 700pro x and epos H6 Pro closeback to be significantly superior in sound quality over the shp9500 🤷‍♂️

How is the soundstage on these? I think that is what I dislike the most about closed after using open at home for so long

Moderately wide, as expected.

Although, I find the shp9500 to be unusually too wide, especially in competitive FPS.

In gaming, the epos H6 Pro & dt 700 pro x had superior sound speration, superior imaging, and superior details.

lol maybe i am just screwed then. I have been using the shp9500 for 3 years and have become so accustomed to it. Might just have to remap my brain to adjust to a more reasonable sound stage. I appreciate the response. Will take at look at your suggested

I am still very much a beginner when it comes to headphones. I guess I just got used to them. One of the biggest upsides is their comfort as I wear them more or less 8hr per day for gaming and work.

Neutral to bright neutral ones could be suitable for your needs. Even just Truthear Hola could be a good start.

I haven't really thought of going the IEM route. Do you have a recommendation that would fit that "open back" sound?

None would really convey an open back feel, I tried finding that myself and couldn't.

Open and semi-open would also let all of the noise in.

Maybe the Raptgo Hook-X? Haven't personally heard them but they are apparently open back planars.

well not all open-back r equally "open?". my 6XX doesn't leak much sound in/out because of the heavy driver damping materials. Compare that to the XS, oh boi, its like wearing nothing.

If it's that big of an issue, I think you just need to use open backs and try not to mind the noise. If you are coming from wide sounding open backs, closed backs simply can't compete.

check out the Fiio fh5s if you wanna try some IEMs they are excelent for gaming thanks to the semi open design their soundstage is huge

There are good ones like Pro. DT770 with EQ (not DT700). Maybe K 273, I'm testing those tomorrow. Most are bad though.

Meze Classics might be up your ally. Quite bassy but they are definitely a step up from the average closed back. Sennheiser 569 (598CS) is a decent option to, though I didn't personally like their sound but they don't sound claustrophobic imo.

You said that you hated closed backs because of their sound. Seeing as how 10 closed backs will have 10 different sound signatures, I find your statement ridiculous. Imagine someone who has only ever driven an A160 saying they hate all Mercedes's.

Well what is your preferred sound signature? The SHP? I think that one is a dud tbh.

What is your price range?

Depending on that I could suggest anything between the stellar AKG K371 and DT 770 all the way to the Audeze LCD XC or DCA Aeon Noire.
