In 2000 I had upgraded to a Minidisc, which didn't skip, and had a TOSlink input so I could rip CDs digitally to MD. Also upgraded my PortaPros to Grado SR60s.

The mid cycle players let you put MP3s on a disc, cool but not great, the upper tier end ones let you use Sony's proprietary compression format and jam hours of music on a disc - pretty impressive. That's assuming you could get the software to work though.

All of them used ATRAC, Sony's compression standard. It was initially equal to 80 minutes, which covered exactly what a CD could. Later versions let you go further than the 80 minute limit, but they didn't become common until mp3 had already won that race.
