I have had a long search over the past few months trying different headphones to try and find the ones that felt good enough to keep me happy for a long time without going to crazy (though as you’ll see, I did go crazy). I scoured the avexchange, Amazon warehouse and crutchfield open box and wear and tear for deals and quick turnarounds/returns. The only mistake I made was a pair I got off of Craigslist.

In the end I tried (I’ll try to remember them all but I know I’ll fail)

ATH-R70X Sundara Edition XS Meze Classic 99 Meze Pro 109 Meze Empyerian Audeze 2C Audeze 2 Rosewood Sennheiser 6XX Sennheiser 650 Focal Clear Mg

I settled on the MG’s obviously. I would not call them definitively the best. But for my listening set up and value what i paid and everything they came the closest to checking the boxes but I still wouldn’t say they are perfect.

The others I loved where the Pro 109s, the Empyrians and the ATH-R70s. I’d call these the best of the under-$500, under $1000, under $1500 and, well-sky high lol. But to be fair I picked up the empyreans for 1700 and didn’t lose any. They were really great. Just not enough to spend double. I did not try the susvaras or lcd-5s or utopias-other things that are really up there.

The ones I kept wanting to love where the audeze’s. They sound so so good. But I can’t stand the headband design or the cables. It was more money to get harts after the fact and the headphone band just couldn’t be fixed to my satisfaction. Redesign that suspension and I’d be all over it.

That’s my story and not a lot of analytical feedback but just wanted to share. Thanks to this sub for all the help (both directly and just by existing)!

Cheers!
