I tried these at Canjam NYC today. One of the first things I went for since I was surprised to see them. They are probably the most open-sounding closed backs I’ve ever heard. They have a good amount of bass while maintaining the hifiman egg sound. They are very comfy, but don’t feel $2000. They kind of hurt when I turned the music volume semi-loud. Highs were getting too much. But it was also super loud in the venue and I had them on for 10 minutes. Happy to answer any questions but just know I’m not the most reliable person to answer with authority.

"They kind of hurt" doesn't inspire a lot of confidence! Could you tell if the treble was uniformly bright, like on the HE1000? Or did there seem to be any narrow peaks?

I think uniformly bright. But it was hard to tell if it was shoutiness in the midrange or spiciness in the treble

That may well be on brand for the egg-shaped stealths, then. I've only tried the non-stealth Arya and HE1000 V2 myself, which I don't find grating in the slightest. (Although I'm sure some people do.) But the HE1000SE is reportedly a fair amount spicier.

Well they do have a track record of shamelessly (and I mean that in the truest sense of the word) ripping off old designs… “neither an homage nor a collaboration… the patents are expired”

Probably an "anti-theft" measure.

Maybe is just this picture, the renders didn't look this bad.

I had the DEVA and while they sounded ok I had to get rid of them for being too ugly. Hifiman loves awful colors

Well we all are ok wearing massive, sometimes 1+kg headphones.
That plus we accepted the Verums' look.

They really need to stop with those catheter tube cables.

Only those who had a catheter knows, though. (& nurses)

Did you get to try them on just the EF400 or the EF600?

5

staybythebay OP t1_ja0uvd8 wrote

EF400. Funnily enough I remember thinking it was odd that turning it up all the way didn't even get them that loud. I might have been using the SE output though

The zahl hm1 was great, storm was excellent, the new grell-phone was pretty cool, good for a prototype.

Are the cups real wood?

AntOk463 t1_ja2ae6c wrote

At that price they should be.

1arghavan t1_ja2anak wrote

It's Hifiman so I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't wood. I wish they learned a thing or two about the choice of wood from ZMF though

7

AntOk463 t1_ja2bw7v wrote

It better be real wood, you are spending $2000 and they can't include real wood. Also it better be real wood because if you're buying something that ugly you at least know it's real wood. No one in their right mind would use fake wood and have the option to make it look like any type of wood and choose that one.

The color choice is so bad, they could have learned a thing or two from the interior of a 2015 Chrysler 200.

ThisGuyFrags t1_ja3gs70 wrote

Unless fake wood somehow has better sonic characteristics?

I highly doubt that's the case, but speculating a possible explanation why

1

AntOk463 t1_ja3ih7h wrote

That is an actual possibility. I remember a reviewer once said "Hifiman headphones aren't the best looking, they aren't the best built, they aren't the most comfortable, but they do have best in class sound quality." And your statement does actually this.

bolhoo t1_ja1259x wrote

Ouch $2000. I was looking for a closed back to complement my Ananda but that's a big stretch

gvarba t1_ja2ebuf wrote

I wonder, who prefers such bright headphones? I once had D9200, and they were impossible to use with heavy genres - kind of hurtful!
