I just ordered a few mini XLR jacks and connectors but still don't like the idea of ripping open mine to mod it (only got them a few months ago)

You can take solace in the fact that they are sort of built to be very repairable, so disassembly should be easy.

Once you take them apart, you'll feel better. I was worried too, but man these things come apart and go back together so easily,
