I'll try to keep this short xD. These cans sounded fine with the hiby fc3, but I got my hands on an old Sony hcd-n456 and I connected the aux with my phone to test drive the hd560s and there is a massive difference in their bass response and sound, at approximately the same level of loudness. They sound much less narrow and the bass is more more elevated. Why is this? I thought the fc3, at least on paper is powerful enough to drive them. Also I checked the system and it has no dsp/eq active. It's not like the fc3 is bad, it's that the Sony kinda improves (or maybe emphasizes) these two aspects. Was I listening to them in the wrong way all this time? Any input is welcome.

Like all these receivers/boomboxes, the headphone jack is a bit of afterthought and does not have a dedicated amplifier, but uses the speaker amp going through a resistor. The resistor causes the amp's output level to be very sensitive to variations in the headphone's impedance at different frequencies, which for most dynamic driver headphones gives you a midbass "boost" (though what's really happening is that it's struggling to drive the other frequencies at the same level). It also reduces the control the amp has over the movement of the driver, but I'm not sure to what extent this has an audible effect. You can get the same effect with an impedance adapter dongle.
