After spying on this sub for like a month I decided to splurge on my audio setup as a birthday treat. Just the standard HD6XX (open box $150, $160 w/ taxes and shipping) and schiit stack with the (Magni+ Heretic and Modi 3E B stock, I think ~$250 shipped). Also got a cable that looked cool on Amazon.

I gotta say this shit right here sounds amazing. Incredible clarity in vocals and hits all the marks on what I wanted. Thanks again for all the advice on here and r/budgetaudiophile r/headphones

I sort of regret getting the schiit stack bc someone offered me $130 for a topping dx3 pro+ but my schiit already shipped. Hope the new Magni lasts longer than other folks' magni3+.

Forgot to add, I downloaded Equalizer APO and Peace GUI and am running some of the AutoEQ configs, sounds like a great improvement on the lower end.

Welcome to the black hole that is this hobby. Kidding aside, 6XX is basically the best value for performance in this world. I started big and finally got a 6XX for reference and I have to say, even not considering the price, they sound right on. Plus a good amp and some EQ, congrats to you

Yeah the EQ really took it a step further bc I'm used to the v shape most consumer headphones strive for so the low end was lil but lacking at first. The EQ def helped it mold to my preference just right 👌

Nice setup. What cable did you get? It looks nice.

Congratulations, you did it right! Nothing like getting on here and seeing people get a Hifiman Aria and hating it as their first headphone lol

Oooh very nice headphone and desk setup, that's definitely endgame material right there. Very jealous cause I could not endgame with Sennheiser 6x0 series, they irritated the heck out of my right ear.

Excellent first setup. The Schiit stack is a solid combo and the 6XX’s are still a bargain I got a pair on the first run from Massdrop I think in 2016 but took awhile before they arrived but worth the wait just a very good headphone.
If you really want to hear those vocals a Bottlehead Crack + 6XX’s is just a awesome pairing .

Yeah, it's been a huge upgrade from my Razer headset. I've read tubes pair well might consider that in the future.

Don't let yourself get hyped up by tubes. Some tube amps really sound super close to solid state. Imho it can be a real waste of money, but everyone on here just blindly recommends tubes all the time.

Source: I have an Xduoo TA-26. A well received tube amp, swapped a ton of different tubes in and can confidently say that there's maybe a 5% difference at best.

Always try a tube amp next to your solid state amp before buying anything, if you can, because some of them sound so clean that you wouldn't be able to spot the differences. I love my setup, but I could live without tubes if I'm honest with myself.

Thanks for the info! I looked into it and the hype hasn't really gotten to me honestly. I feel like anything beyond my current setup will require me to spend much more money and time researching for such a small difference that I will probably not notice, it's just not worth it to me.

For tubes especially it's so much more expensive for idk, a negligible change in overall audio performance. Of course I can only speak for the Xduoo TA-26 (and the Fosi Audio T3, not a good amp) and well, I do not know how good something like the Bottlehead Crack would perform (and I won't ever find out, because importing things to Europe is such a pain).

I do have heard that tube amps like the Eufonika H5 perform very nicely and I 100% trust that this is true, though I won't try it out. Sure, better capacitors, probably better circuitory too that operates at the tube's limits and such, but I highly doubt this will make a significant difference.

But all that said, reviewers and audiophiles like their beautiful words and fancy descriptions, but in reality everything is a little bit less awesome that most reviews say.

Damn, now I really wanna try one out. Unfortunately there aren't many places that allow you to test audiophile products by me. I think the only spot I know is Schiit's store in Santa Clarita but that's a few hrs away lol

Very very nice, hd6xx is an amazing pair of headphones for the price, their vocal and mids presentation is insane versus what you pay for them.

How to get open box hd6xx in Canada? Looking to order one. Any advice?

I got mine from offer up. It looked like a return/refurb reseller. I also saw some options on eBay and /r/Avexchange but since the price hike prices are a bit higher.

What was your setup before? And also, as a former Tidal customer, I’d recommend Qobuz over them. Hi-res > MQA.

I forgot to add, I was just using Spotify and a Razer Kraken gaming headset. I decided to switch to Tidal when I got these to get the full exp of the upgrade. As soon as Spotify adds hifi audio im heading back lol.
