So I've seen a WILD variety of opinion around various sennheiser's in the midrange, and wanted to get my own ears on it.

My taste in music is probably what most audiophiles would call "trash", being focused around techno, trance, hardstyle, phonk, DnB, witch house, metal, industrial, and a variety of other genres few people respect.

So my taste in headphones has always leaned "warm" and deep bassy. Starting with Senn HD590's powered off a META42 back in the day, moving to ATH-A900, Then DT770Pro 80ohm, then ATH-A900LTD.

Since I sold the HD590 a long time ago, the HD560S is my first foray back into open-back in some time (my living situations never were optimal for it until lately, as well)

I'll keep this short and summarize that, given all i've read about the HD560S's here, I think they're wildly misunderstood, or looked down upon due to their price alone. On my E10K with the bass boost on, the bass is deeper and slammier than the DT770's, while still having mids that actually bring vocals out, and the highs are less painful than the DT770.

The A900LTD is a weird comparison, as they sound almost exactly the same, except the highs are somehow less painful and more detailed, with some edge to the A900LTD for the SPL it can give bass (a certain song with a buzzsaw bassline for example tickles my eardrum in ways no other can i've tried has).

The HD560S definitely has a superpower in how flat it is, and how well it can EQ into almost any desired sound profile. Kind of a jack of all trades, master of none, situation. I love that I can go from Frenchcore, to classic rock, and they don't miss a beat on either end. Fire up a game, and they're still great. And unlike my DT770 daily drivers, my eardrums don't bleed from the highs.

Next up, maybe a budget Planar, or HD58X and HD6XX. I'd pay real money if Sennheiser produced a Planar tuned like the HD560S with a larger driver.

I have the 58x and personally like them for metal cause of the good quality mids and not too forward treble, as well as a decent amount of bass. Don't have many other headphones to compare them to though, but I definitely prefer them to my ATH-M40x, although I don't dislike those.

I'm also a metal fan, and the reasons why you like the HD58X are the same reasons why I'm disappointed in the HD58X.

Maybe it depends what subgenre of metal

Maybe. My preference is mostly /r/symphonicmetal with female vocals.

I feel the same about the HD560s too, especially coming from a DT 770 pro ohms : it was a very nice introduction to audiophile headphones but too sibilant for my ears and gets hot quick being a closed back . I prefer the HD560s in nearly every aspect from sound to comfort.
