I just bought what some call entry level hifi headphones Fidelio X2HR I have them with amp and EQ and this is my first experience with good headphones
So I thought it’d be nice if we can have recommendations of music or what makes you go WHOA when you get lost on HiFi sound?
I’ll start:
Chemical Brothers and Kraftwerk sound really insane in HiFi!!
Mezzanine is not only an incredible album musically, but the production and engineering is just, man.
If I could only pick one track to test new gear with. Angel would be my pick every time. Can’t think of another track that gives me such a thorough impression of how gear performs in such a small amount of time.
Edit: replied so quickly I didn’t even see the Porcupine Tree mention, damn fine taste you’ve got.
Big ups for Mezzanine love!! Black Milk is my standout
Deadwing on vinyl with good headphones is absolutely biblical.
Lorna shore, Diamonds to dust, ocean ate Alaska, spite
I have the same feelings about Lorna Shore. As a HIFI music, de facto it sounds pretty moody and compressed. Try Architects from Abbey Road Live or Rammstein, the difference is pretty big. From deathcore I would say smth like Fit for an Autopsy, at least their last album.
Can I ask, sincerely, why artists like Lorna Shore and Oceans Ate Alaska? Genuinely curious because despite kinda liking these bands myself, I found the new Lorna shore to be so compressed and distorted it was damn near unlistenable on any of my decent quality gear.
Is it just a familiarity/reference thing?
Lorna doesn't sound good with everything, i use the Hifiman he1000se for this band it's hard to get everything from it
I tried it in my Aeon Open X and Closed X and it was just completely unlistenable, like if it was the only thing I heard on the headphones I’d think they were malfunctioning.
Sounds fine on ny gym headphones though which is where I like that kind of music the most, so it all works out
I got the opposite impression from Lorna Shore. That mix is just too busy and it's exhausting to listen to for more than a few songs, especially this new album.
Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Moonspell, Tiamat, Devin Townsend, Opeth, Ghost, Dimu Borgir. Tom Waits. Pink Floyd.

Haven't thought about Moonspell and Tiamat since my high school days in the late 90's buying Century Media compilation CDs. Take my upvote, stranger, your music taste is impeccable.
That's when and how I discovered both as well!
Moonspell is still very active. Tiamat hasn't put out an album in 10 years... Both bands evolved quite a bit. Hermitage by Moonspell is very well done, and a blast to listen to with good headphones.
Idk but I just can't stand Devin's production style, that wall of sound gives no respite. I love the songs tho, shame.

My “yeah duh” answers are fairly typical in that I’d go with Mezzanine (Massive Attack), Rage Against the Machine (self-titled), and Moving Pictures (Rush).
For answers I don’t see as often when this question is asked, I’d go with The Mantle by Agalloch, Program Music by Kashiwa Daisuke, and Harmony in Ultraviolet by Tim Hecker.

On the pop side of things, I recently discovered Melanie Martinez's album k-12. The production on that album is beautiful, everything sits just right.

Also, The Midnight orchestral arrangements they did about a year ago. But really anything the Midnight does is amazing. So many awesome sounds going on in their stuff.
‘Rings Around The World’ by Super Furry Animals
If you consider DT 770s as HiFi, from time to time I really enjoy listening to the live sessions from SiriusXM (Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, Gayle, Seether, just to name a few I like). The sound quality is usually pretty good and I love the "rawness" of live performances.
Anything you’re familiar with. You’ll definitely hear a huge difference when go from stock earphones to good headphones.

For something different but still in my opinion expertly mixed/mastered, "narrowcast." have put out a few songs and an EP that I've been really vibing with. They've got either I think an album or an EP releasing this Friday too!
Not that known, but mamomo's soundtracks are a treat to listen to on high end headphones.

I Robot by Alan Parsons Project. Fucking hell, that’s an experience.
The mastering of most Radiohead albums is very well done and the quality really comes through on a pair of high-end cans.

Plastic beach by gorillaz is pretty gooddd in that aspect
Between the Buried and Me. They're a prog metal band with a lot of wall of sound sections, and hifi makes all the instruments shine through even when things get heavy
Black tongue, really well mastered, I reccomend the songs fauxhammer and young gloom
lorna shore, a lot of their songs are compressed but "welcome back, O' sleeping dreamer" is really enjoyable compared to some of their other songs which hurt to listen to loud but are boring quiet, be careful with the volume on this song it is extremely loud and jumpscared me lol.
rings of saturn, my favorite albums are "lugal ki en" and "gidim" very technical and outerspace like I guess you could say.
On the electronic side Neon Jungle by Avionics & RefraQ is the first thing that comes to my mind - great textures and space. Also most songs from Ekcle
If you like electronic music then noone does it like KOAN Sound.

I would say Eminem's music has the biggest impact even I switch to hifi. There is so much detail in his instramental, all songs improved by switching, but his songs were the most shocking and traceable so much detail I couldn't believe this is the same song I've been listening to this whole time. I guess because he's so big that he would put a lot of effort into the production of his music. Also this was my first time using open backs, and by removing the bass, it allowed me to hear instruments and details I didn't know about.
If you want song recommendations, check out GNAT for the production, No Regrets for nice bass and vocals, Favorite Bitch for the detail. Also Notorius Thugs for the soundstage. Tyler Herro can show the differences between high end headphones.

Camellia.
For those unaware, Camellia is a Japanese EDM producer who is infamous in Rhythm Game communities for his songs often being some of the hardest in various different games. That partly stems from his sound design being so complex. Some of his songs, my favorite being “chrono driver -fragment-” often has so much going on that on regular, consumer level stuff it sounds genuinely muddy and confusing, but on hi-fi you can actually follow what’s going on it’s wonderful.
Do yourself a favor and listen to chrono driver -fragment- if you’re into that kind of thing.
