I got this JVC from cash converters for a whopping £29.99 and after a clean up and a test it sounds better than a Magni whether I use the forbidden high output impedance headphone out or directly speaker tap it which is funny and enjoyable to say the least. Especially with the fun output vu meter to compliment the listening experience.

I don't come around these parts much more but when I do I see two 580 posts in a row. Nice. I've had mine for like 5-6 years now or something. Still great.

It's the best of the 6x0 series but honestly I have it and its kinda just lacking all round compared to actually good options even in cheaper prices

I absolutely love '70s-style hifi. I should buy a nice-looking radio tuner and replace the guts with a cheap DAC and a good amp. Keep the big fluid-damped knob to control level.

I had this amp as my first vintage piece and loved it. But my headphone output became very crackly. I tried googling a fix but nothing doing. Has anybody got any ideas? Seeing this post reminds me I should get it fixed!

Thanks OP!

Great setup btw!

uhm, thats no vu meter - its a peak meter.

although a vu meter could be build with leds, but needs kind of an smoothing algorithm then because it much more measures like RMS level and not peak.

VU meter is a more umbrella term than saying peak meter

but its not right because its 2 different things/measurements. level meter would be the right umbrella term.

Vu meter probably putting placebo on you to make you think the sound is more dynamic. This is why people buy studio dacs like the rme-adi2 and say it sounds "cleaner" and "more dynamic". Its all in your head.

Tbf the ADI2 is probably more lofi than this '79 nugget 🤨
