I'm guessing if you got them from some 3rd party Amazon reseller they were quite likely counterfeits of indeterminate quality.

You're going to need an adapter to plug it into a modern iphone. Get the one from the apple store, and then get the wired headphones off your choice. If you're looking for cheap and good buds, I'm not able to advise though. Not my wheelhouse.
