I usually use the default tips provided when I test the iems as I believe the included tips define the IEM's true sound signature as a whole. Though I personally swap them around on the IEMs I daily drive. Unfortunately that doesn't account for units that don't use/include the stock tips and sadly I'm usually unaware if they don't.
