There is no such thing as "cheating" when it comes to sound quality. If it sounds right, it sounds right.

In the same way that adding forced induction to an engine is cheating. It’s about the end experience after all; who cares what the manufacturer did to get there (particularly at that end of the pricing scale)?

Forced induction might be the greatest thing ever to happen to engines. Got 6 second quarter mile time Eagle Talons making 1800hp thanks to big ass turbski's. Its a beautiful thing.

Blze001 t1_iy1u6kn wrote

And 2 of those seconds is just turbo lag

Well, if I get a 200hp naturally aspirated car and I slap a 1bar turbo on it I can essentially double my horsepower, if I do the same to a 200hp car which already has a turbo in it I'd be lucky to get to 300hp, so yeah, fuck that, Honda S2000 it is for me

Amphiscian t1_iy3iphz wrote

would a better analogy be the Mustang 4-bangers having fake engine noise piped into the car via the stereo system?

3

twd_2003 t1_iy3z6df wrote

The audio experience of forced induction isn’t its main purpose tho; and in any case even many N/A cars have audio piped in because the noise isolation is so good these days. The primary reason for forced induction is speed or efficiency, and the primary reason for DSP is “better” sound

If using EQ is cheating, then I have been cheating for a very long time.

I mean my HD700's sounds like HD800's due to EQ. I'm cheating and I'm not sorry :)

Headphones with built-in filters have been around for a decade, maybe more.

Every TWS in-earphone, every wireless headphone has that nowadays.

My problem with this is that the headphone HAS to be USB-C or lightning. What if I wanna plug it into a TRS device that can't send audio out through a USB port?

Edit: Some of you are kinda missing the point. Yes, I'm not the target audience. Yes, there's easy ways around the issue I mentioned. But I feel this is really consumer-unfriendly (cable has to be fixed, might have to buy other things to make it work with your device), and it just seems like a great way to make more e-waste. At least it doesn't have a battery. It's fine for a handful of entry level IEMs I guess but I'd hate to see Moondrop start doing this on more expensive stuff.

Good thing most people use iems with phone only and headphones at a pc 🙃 I assume they are who they are targeting ; phone users

Lots of modern laptops have usb c

SolfenTheDragon t1_iy38sxf wrote

Yeah, even bottom budget sub 200$ laptops have audio support via USB C now. I don't think Iv seen a laptop from a major manufacturer without USBC in the past two years.

FastGecko5 t1_iy4zl3q wrote

That's fine I guess? I use a dedicated DAP but if I used my phone (which has a headphone jack) or my laptop (also has a jack) and I have to use this USB-C thing then, what, I can't charge and listen at the same time? Another issue is the cable has to be fixed because the DSP is contained in the USB-C part of it.

Idk. I'm not the target audience but I just think it's dumb. How about tune the IEM better instead of just throwing what is essentially a brute-force solution at it?

Buy an audio interface with an ADC like the Behringer U-Phoria for $40

havequickblue t1_iy2yujy wrote

Tbh, I wish ALL IEM makers included or had the option to include a little $2 USB DAC with the exact tuning and filters the maker was going for as a sort of 'reference intent' tuning.

Seriously, these things are cheap enough.

Makes me wonder what the difference between DSP Quarks and Variations will be since they have a similar response. Technicalities maybe?

I find it interesting that for many years headphones have been just two transducers connected to an analog audio source. And that has been the norm. Built in dsp might be a natural evolution of what we consider a headphone

Any that do it? I would be very willing to get one with dsp justo try it out. I suspect i might just get a winner 1st try

But cavity filters and multiple driver iems also introduce phase shifts. The problem is that the phase response of iems is not usually characterized.

What is the worst thing by DSP?
Why not for all headphones?

I think: for every instance of headphone: i should be ably to read a unique id from it, go to the manufacturer's website and query the equalizations files to some targets specifically for that instance. I know that their measurements are not perfect either, but still the best that an average user would get otherwise.

MadLustEnvy t1_iy8wj8r wrote

This is standard in the audio world in genral. This is why the very few wireless headphones that have a true analog input for unpowered playback tend to sound like rubbish. The analog path on those specific headphones don't apply the DSP, and you're getting the raw output of those drivers.

DSP tuning unlocks the potential in many drivers that otherwise are not tuned.

catsandlatars t1_iy4933c wrote

This is marketing garbage because it’s already all over the headphone industry. Just look at wireless.
