I just saw a post about a guy recommending to wash your earpads, especially in moist climates and/or if you sweat quite frequently, I tick both boxes so I decided to wash mine (as they recommended, with warm water and cloth detergent).

Now I have to dry the earpads and my question is:

Will leaving them in the open sun damage them in any way? Then sun can get kinda hot where I live, enough to cause cause sunburn, although outdoors temperature never exceeds 25°c.

My headphones are he4xx if it helps.

Depends on the construction and materials but generally yes. Glue melts and excessive sun to leather can cause cracking. Though leather do need conditioning every once in a while. Just to be safe go with air dry.

you can dry them in the shade during a sunny day. i did that when i washed my velour hd25 pads and they dried all the way through.

Leaving more or less anything out in direct for sunlight for too long is likely to cause some sort of UV degradation. However, over the period of time that it takes them to dry... I'd say unlikely.

Dry them in the shade for peace of mind.

If the sun can damage us, imagine what it does to headphones 😅
