It adjusts the angle of the plastic part that holds the drivers a little - so to apply more or less pressure against your ears.

Firm is, well... firmer (more angled towards the head) and light is as the name suggests lighter (the structure to which the drivers are attached is angled slightly outwards to apply less pressure).

Hope this helps. I just leave mine on firm because it doesn't bother me, but the difference, although not huge, is actually noticeable.

It just sets the limit of how far the driver can fold out. So setting it on the firm mode limits how far it opens so it can clamp a little more.

It’ll angle the drivers tighter or more outward on your head.

The switch controls the angle of the drivers relative to the pads on the headband, that's it.

Take them off your head and experiment with the switch. You'll notice that you can only set it to "firm" by pushing the drivers inward. They automatically click, and stay angled inward.

Then you can set the switch to middle or "light" which lets the drivers swing outward again.

I like the medium setting, and for me it stays in that position. People often complaints it doesn't but for me it does. :D Sometimes I have it on light, then I can wear it all day long and never have a single amount of discomfort. But I prefer the sound when it's either firm or middle. :D Merry christmas!

It adds a chunky piece of plastic at eye level, to make you look dorkier while wearing the headphones. (Disclaimer: I have no ill will towards PortaPro owners, this sentiment is borne of the self-loathing I feel when I look into the mirror while wearing them). I’d really prefer it wasn’t there, I don’t find it useful, and it ruins the retro aesthetic in favour of a Borg implant cosplay aesthetic.
