Submitted by GodlyShotz t3_10lm2z5 in headphones

So I’m currently using Sennheiser hd560s powered by idi zen 2 and am upgrading to hifiman XS head phones and want a more powerful dac amp to get the most out of them. However most know that ps5 does not support usb 2.0 so how would I get a magni/modo stack to work? I’ve heard that you can get a usb A 1.0 to Toslink cable and use it this way. Doing this supposedly works and allows you to use tempest 3d as a well. Does anyone use this method? If so what cable are you using? Any other dac amp combos that work or solutions other than hdmi converter Chime in!

I have some Headphones in m collection and still prefer the 560s for gaming. Out can Just get an amp If U need more Power. You could Go Zen Stack or topping amp or whatever you Like and have alot of Power.

I use the schiit hel because I like the analog mic control.

How do you like it? I heard the sound stage isn’t that great is that true?

I have never A/B tested against my magnius/modius stack but I would imagine your mileage will varying depending on your headphones. The Hel is very convenient for gaming and using a mic but if you’re trying to min/max audio quality then perhaps it would be better to use a non-gaming product.

Best thing to get is a Schiit Hel. Its works perfectly with PS5 has a mic input and can use the 3D audio as well since it uses USB. You need a UAC1 dac/amp.

Is that what you’re using?

Yea and I've used it with high end stuff like LCD-X and MDR-Z1R, also Ananda.

How is the sound staging? I’ve heard it’s not as good as the magni/modo stack or some topping DACs. Just what I’ve seen in multiple reviews which is only reason I’ve been hesitant on it.

For me and some reviews I've read as well have said that its pretty transparent, like the headphone you have matters more. The ananda is pretty open headphone and playing games with it, never felt closed in.

JDS Atom Dac + (109$) with their UAC1 fallback cable (10$) works perfectly with PS5 3D audio. You can save a little money by buying b stock which is what I did. Then you can hook that up to whatever Amp you want and you’re good to go.

GodlyShotz OP t1_j5zick1 wrote

Not sure what b stock is lol

B stock are new products that a company sells at a partial discount due to minor cosmetic flaws. You can get discounts on a lot of electronics this way. Regardless, even paying full price the Atom DAC is worth it and JDS has the best customer service I’ve ever seen from a company. I had a Schiit Modi previously but sold it because the Atom+ is one of the few DACs that works seamlessly with the PS5 (with their adapter cable).

The new SMSL dacs(released a few weeks ago) comes with a switch that switches it to UAC1 mode so it works with any console.

What models are compatible?

SMSL D12 is the only one that have the switch so far. Its a DAC & AMP.

i found a steelseries nova pro open box for 85$ on amazon, im using the dac without the headset lol this is mostly because xbox is very picky about the dac, but it works decently with ps5 too (both of my consoles are wired usb to the dac and it works flawlessly)

For the ps5 I’d just go with something that can be driven from the controller, I’m using shp9500s atm, the only way I’ve made external dacs work is through the tv optical out and the mix gets iffy for headphones cause it thinks it’s speakers…

And honestly I kinda liked the 560s more for gaming than the XS.

May i ask why you prefer the 560s? Everything I see says the XS have better imaging and soundstage.

ragecndy t1_j5xrc5q wrote

Not really better imaging imo, they don’t sound as 3d, they do sound bigger but mostly just taller not that much wider.

They’re better headphones all around for music, but I was super impressed with the 560s for gaming, don’t have them anymore to compare cause I couldn’t stand the clamp but the one game I played with them was ghost of tsushima and I thought they sounded crazy 3d, might been the actual game post processing tho, still for that reason get something that works from the controller imo.
