They are all audibly transparent DACs. They all sound the same.

Want less piercing treble? Use either a peak filter for specific frequency, or a shelf for to pull the entire treble range down a couple dB.

>Hi, I have a Topping E50 but I find it sounds piercing in the upper treble.

The topping E50 is a totally normal DAC really. Modi+ won't sound different.

If it sounds piercing it's your headphones.

The FiiO K5 Pro certainly doesn't sound as sharp with this headphone even though they are both the same sigma delta type of DAC. I am sure it is not the headphone this time.

The treble response used to be even sharper when I paired the E50 with L50. Now I have switched to a supposedly neutral amplifier marketed for professional use, the Lake People G111 MKII and it subdues the peaks quite nicely. It used to sound so shouty even when I am just listening to dialogues from game or movies.

Again. Like the others also say. If you have piercing headphones, don't keep buying dacs, amps. Literally, use EQ or get other headphones. You are doing this totally ass-backwards.

Yeah headphones are of course the first thing you should consider changing normally since they give the most significant changes. I guess I just have an unhealthy attachment to this particular headphone. LoL

Austrian Audio Hi-X65, was fine before with my FiiO K5 Pro, but the bass is not as satisfying on that DAC/Amp. The amount of treble is perfect on the K5 though.

If the output impedance is the same on all these devices, there isn't a single logical reason as to why you'd hear such differences in bass and treble. It's not like you're switching from an OTL tube amp to a clean solid state one lol, you're comparing apples with apples and they should really taste the same..

I don't know about that . It is my first time experimenting with separate DAC and amp. Used to use an all in one solution like the FiiO K5 Pro. So I think I would experiment with other DACs and see if it made a difference. In this hobby one should trust their own ears.

Thanks for sharing!

Fam, the X65 doesn't have bass because it's 10dB lower than what is perceived neutral bass shelf according to Harman. And coupled with its forward leaning upper midrange and Treble/air regions... Of course it's gonna sound bright on any solid state DAC/AMP... Better slap on some EQ or get a better tuned headphone.

Sorry if I'm coming off as aggressive😅🤝🏾 u/entivoo...

I can send you some Parametric EQ Preset to test it out

I'd be surprised if you could really tell.

One of the best things you can buy if you get started down this rabbit hole is a switcher. That way you switch sources or amps very quick.

I learned how little dacs and amps actually do (tube amps not withstanding)

I put a song or section of song I know very well on repeat and listen switching back and forth. And I really don't hear anything really different ... I guess I'm just not audiophile enough.

Match them with 0.1dB difference and that imagined treble difference will go away.

This post has been removed. Please note the following rule:

>Rule 2: Ask purchase help questions in the Shopping and Setup Help Desk found at https://reddit.com/r/headphones/about/sticky > >Requests for product opinions, comparisons, and general purchase advice must be made in the dedicated Shopping and Setup Help Desk found at /r/headphones/about/sticky instead of a new post.

You may also use r/headphoneadvice but please search their resources and familiarize yourself with their rules first before posting.

What questions are considered purchase advice?

  • A request for product suggestions, comparison requests, or opinion requests fall under the purchase advice rule. These can often be found by searching first.

  • Any suggestion or comparison request pertaining to headphones, IEMs, DACs, amps, or other accessories should be directed to the purchase help thread or r/headphoneadvice.

  • Asking the subreddit to help make a decision to buy a product does fall under this rule (e.g. "should I get dekoni pads for my HD650?").

Why does this rule even exist?

What if the link doesn't work?

  • The post can usually be found on the top r/headphones, and titled Shopping, Setup, and Technical Help Desk.

you can try HQplayer (it has a free trial) and upsample a music file with an apodizing filter. Some recordings have analog-digital conversion errors baked in that can cause treble glare/harshness, which apodizing upsampling should fix. Try it out and see if it goes away!
