The comic itself is not supposed to be funny at all. But it became famous because the artist was known for funny and light hearted comics, and once something becomes famous memes follow.

No, it's funny because it's such a hilariously awful approach to such a serious topic in what was supposed to be a comedy comic.

I guess it's the becoming meme part that I just don't get. It's kinda mean for a heavy comic but that's just me

In a vacuum, I would agree with you. The meme part came from how it was a sudden, very unexpected turn compared to everything else that had came before it. A large portion of comedy is subversion of expectations and boy did that comic subvert the expectations of historically funny, light hearted comics. So while it isn't the most funny thing to me, I can see how some people can find it funny.
