Zune gets shit on, but goddamn I loved my OG brown Zune when I was a teen. I have so much to thank that thing for. Not least of which is that it introduced me to metal, which became my favorite genre. If anyone had the OG Zune, it was preloaded with several music videos and one of them was All That Remains.

Did you like squirting?

I beg your pardon

Yes, "Squirting" is what Microsoft called the act of sending songs from Zune to Zune.

Coalbus t1_j6lhls8 wrote

Ooooh you’re right, I completely forgot about that lol. I was the only person I knew with a Zune at that time so unfortunately, no, I never did get to squirt.

I did some squirting. That's how I discovered Cradle of Filth back in 9th grade. We started the transfer of a whole album at the beginning of a 90min long class, and we we're getting concerned if it was gonna finish before class got out. It was SLOW

Kid: Nothing much, just squirting.

I remember the WiFi syncing was really slow as well. It was cool but it failed often lol.

I had worse players.
Iriver E10 for example - a little noisy. Samsungs were cleaner but still no bass and no power. The best sound at the time was still from CD players.

You can load the HD with WMA lossless, but I don't think Windows 10/11 supports that codec anymore. I have a bunch that I converted from FLAC to WMA lossless back in Win8 days.

Wow, Microsoft was pushing WMA that late? I thought it died with XP.

Solegide OP t1_j6lac23 wrote

Oh lets see here..... Everything you need.. MP3, WMA, WMA Pro, and WMA Lossless. Oh video stuff, so MP4, and WMV. Yeah, joking aside, it was rough.

minecrafter1OOO t1_j6lha3k wrote

Doesn't even support AAC???

And wait... no WAV support???? even the crappiest mp3 DAPs played WAV

ColdsnapBryan t1_j6lp4ka wrote

I wouldn't sleep on old DAPs or even phones. I'd get flammed here saying it, so I'm not going to name brands and eras, but there's some stuff outt here that can be had for $20 and sound better than the TOTL DAPs for lower Z headphones.

I use an iPod most of the time for my music listening. Mainly because the aesthetic of the old ones (also the solitaire), and it’s useful in my car with USB because android auto and me don’t mix well for music purposes.

The Zune HD was such a beautiful, well built device. Still take mine out and give it a listen once in a while.

My Zune was heavily used and loved. The battery explodes inside... Trashing the whole unit.

Zune on Windows were my go to media player. The design were ahead of its time; while itunes today is very much outdated, zune still look fresh today.

Reminds me of those Nokia Lumia smartphones. Windows-8-like UI in pocket size. They should have stopped trying after Windows CE.

1

Solegide OP t1_j6nwowd wrote

Lumia's ran Windows Phone, which heavily influenced by the Zune HD, especially the the media app. In fact, the original Windows Phone 7 still used the Zune software to sync content.

They were nice but everyone I know who had one had their HD crash about a year in. Meanwhile iPod owners had theirs last for 10 or so years or more.
