My DT 770 Pro sounds bad, what should I do?

For some reason my DT770 Pro 80ohms just sounds bad to me. Been using them for close to 2 months and it still sounds bad.

I'm currently using MSI B550M Mortar, it's using the 5+ Optical S/PDIF (Realtek® ALC1200/ALC1220P Codec). Is the codec good enough?

I find it relatively soft even at 50% and sometimes my music sounds HOLLOW and BLAND. I prefer bass music like drift phonk etc, but it all just sounds HOLLOW and BLAND. EVEN my KZ ZSN pro x at 30% sounds RICHER, LOUDER and it feels like the music is there and not at the other side of the room.

I've read some comments on the internet and they seem to have the same issue. Some were able to resolve the issue by doing EQs(crinacle) but it's still the same for me

I'm wondering whether anybody else experiences the same, and what's your solution to help? It would be appreciated if you guys could choose for me cause I'm currently planning to return to Amazon which is kind of troublesome -Get a DAC/AMP? -Get those portable ones daps? -What kind of DAC/AMP/DAPS to get? Update1️⃣: Thank you all for giving out your suggestions! I've found something that shocked me, I forgot that I owned an Apple iPad(10th gen), and did not do any testing on them. So I found out that it sounds so much LOUDER and BASS-IER than my pc and my laptop(which I also forgot to test out). Lastly, I plan on buying a DAC/AMP and trying them out with it, the audio probably sounds bad because it is not loud enough for me to enjoy. Will update again when I get my dac.(25/1/2023)

Update2️⃣: Got the Fiio BTR5. My DT770 Pro does sound much nicer and clearer when it's loud. But I just found out a HUGE caveat for getting the BTR5 which is that when it's used as a USB DAC it drains it's battery, while when it's charging it does NOT work as a USB DAC at all(I'm not sure if other Bluetooth daps is like that). I'm here to say that those who are getting the DT770Pro 80ohm edition and feel like it sounds too soft and unclear maybe try to get dac/amp to help. Also warning for those getting the BTR5 for it's USB DAC I would not recommend, best to get something stationary instead. Hope this post helps any having the same issue. Update3️⃣: Found a way to use my Fiio BTR5 as a usb DAC while Charging it, just have to use it as a usb DAC first then turn on the charging via the Bluetooth connection from my phone(use the app). Ended up still buying a different DAC/AMP the Topping dx1, reason being when I turn on the Fiio BTR5 it always connects to my phone Bluetooth meanwhile I'm still watching a show while trying to use my pc which is annoying. Got the Topping dx1 yesterday they sound pretty much the same as the Fiio BTR5, I just wanted something good and not break my wallet (02/2/2023)

I don't have experience with either of those, I'm a crinacle fanboy and my favorite headphone is the blessing 2 dusk.

It’s worth it imo. Do not enjoy the 770s at all and the blessing 2 dusk is a daily driver for me.

Sadly this says basically nothing. Tells us nothing about the specs that matter at the very least.

Anyway, this could definitely be an issue with your audio hardware. I would get a cheap amp and see if it helps. The FiiO E10K is pretty good and can be had for very little money used.

Those are just audio chips and tell us nothing about anything else relevant going on on the motherboard.

It's pretty decent. Considering that you can buy it for like $40, it's excellent.

That's still a perfectly good price. If you want something better than the E10K you usually need to spend $200 or above.

Zen dac IS slightly warmer and has an xbass Option might be a good Route to Go for you. Can Drive Headphones up to 300ohm maybe some easier to Drive 600ohm and has Low gain for iem.

Yep I hated the Beyerdynamic when I tested it. Sounds like the bass, mids and treble are detached from each other

It could be possible that the power output of the board is not sufficient, but most motherboards I've used have been more than suitable for 80ohm phones. I imagine it's the sound of the headphones to be honest.

The kz has more of a v shaped sound and you may just prefer the fun that having raised treble and bass gives.

An amp could help but it's more likely that other headphones would be better suited. See if there's any local audio/hifi stores, they should be happy to let you audition some gear.

There are 2 small issues here.

1st is whether you actually have ALC1200 or ALC1220 as there is a big difference between them. ALC1200 is capable of only 1V 30mW at 32Ohm, while ALC1220 is capable of 2V (don't know the power).

2nd is the MSI implementation of it. My MSI Z690-A has only 3.2mW out of ALC897 (a $229 board with low end chip...) and it has 80Ohm output impedance at that. I don't know how powerful the ALC897 can get, but certainly that board is much quieter than than my other Gigabyte board using ALC892 (the same chip, ALC897 is a refresh). I recall multiple posts of people at HeadphoneAdvice complaining on low output of their MSI onboards, at least 2 of MAG Mortart series on B series AMD chipsets.

That said DT770 are an entry level closed backs and you simply might not like their sound.
